turning chisel grind into two-sided grind?

Is it possible to take a v-ground, chisel edge (like an Emerson) and sharpen it on both sides of the edge without taking too much metal off the blade? Can it be done without a grinder?

Thanks.

Trying to make a chisel grind into an equally ground blade will remove a considerable portion from the edge of your blade, and I would say, yes, it would require a grinder, and experience.

I don't think it's worth it. Just sell that one, and get a conventionally ground knife to replace it, if you don't like it that is. ;)

I don't think it would be much of a big deal. If I am reading your post correctly you are just talking about the edge of the knife not the main bevels right? If I were you I would just sharpen it on the flat side when it needs to be sharpened, and pretty soon you will have a regular bevel.

Thanks for the replies. As much as I want to believe Kile, I'm worried that Spyken and Mike are right. Although I could just ignore the chisel edge and start sharpening the other side, when I draw it on paper, it seems that this approach would never get the two sides angles' to match. Thus, I'm afraid thath the only way to do this right is to completely remove the chisel edge by grinding it flat and then starting over in creating a new, double sided edge. Anyone agree, disagree?

I removed the chisel edge from my Commander with no problems. Just used a diamond stone and an angle guide with no problems. The knife now has a great edge, and is very sharp.

As for how much steel is removed, it is only a noticable amount near the pivot end of the blade. This is just because the handle didn't allow me to regrind that part of the blade, and thus a tiny point still has its original edge. This tiny little point sticks down just a tad further than the rest of the blade.

Eric,

Did you take the whole chisel edge down to 90 degrees (flat) and then put a new one on? Do you have any pictures? Thanks.

Nope, just started grinding on the opposite side until I got a burr along the entire factory sharpened side. Then I sharpened as usual on a Sharpmaker.

Don't have any pictures at the moment, I will try and post some for you tomorrow. I got one with the black coated blade, the coating is pretty badly scrathed up in some places. Doesn't bother me as I intended to use this knife anyway, and would have gotten scratched anyway.

Here are some wuick pics of the blade:
