Turns out I'm a traditional kind of guy. But...

Hey guys. So after several years of carrying the latest and greatest folding blade, I decided to give the old Buck 110 a try again. That was about a year ago. Haven't missed the tacticool stuff since.

With that in mind I'm hoping you fine folks can help me out with some suggestions. I don't mind spending a little coin on a nice or "special" knife. I like the size and heft of the Buck, but I wouldn't mind stepping up my game in both blade (better edge retention) and scale materials (prettier to look at). I have XXL+ sized hands so having something I can get my hand around comfortably is a big deal. And since that usually means a longer handle, I don't mind carrying a 3.5"+ blade. Also, the one thing I really do miss about a modern folder is a lanyard hole; I pocket carry the Buck and having a lanyard to tug on would really help dig it out.

So, what do you suggest? What should I look for that might basically be considered an 'upgrade' to the Buck, that might also offer a lanyard hole?

Thanks!

The GEC #21 Bull Buster is a large knife. 4 5/8 inches long closed. The Tidioute and Northfield Brands come in a variety of handle options, but do not have a Lanyard hole. The #21 Farm & Field Knife is the same pattern available with NifeBrite Acrylic Handles (glow in the dark), and also Black or Orange Delrin Handles. The Farm and Field 21 does have a Lanyard Hole. Available from GEC Distributors.

GEC 23L (liner lock) 4.5 inch handle.

if you do like the Buck 110, they provide custom jobs with selection of different steels and handles. downside is no lanyard, but they can come with a sheath of your choosing. Queen also has some large pocket knives like the mountain man which can be locking or non-locking and it comes with a lanyard hole.

The Queen #3 Mountain Man. It will compare favorably to the Buck 110 in size, has a lanyard hole and D2 Steel is a great edge holder.

Well there are several in the bigger size range like

- GEC #23
- GEC #73 (smaller than the #23, but still not too small)
- Case Slimline Trapper (w/o lanyard hole)
- Case Trapper (w/o lanyard tube)
- Case Sodbuster (regular, but without a lanyard hole)
- GEC #21

As you almost own the 110, I could also recommend a 501...

GEC 42 is my favorite large traditional. Here is mine in ebony.

Or for something different how about a GEC 23 bull lock. Here is mine in rosewood.

The 42 Trader really reminds me a fancy streamlined 110. That's the first knife I compared it to when I handled mine. It's a little thin if you're looking for a hand filling knife like the 110, but it certainly could be considered a Gentleman's Buck.

I'll add to the GEC #23 and Queen Mountain Man suggestions. I carry a 23 everyday and love it.

If you like the Buck 110, go to the Buck custom shop. Good knives, better steels, fancy finish.... everything you wanted.

What Woodrow said.

The Buck Custom shop will set you up with a 110 in S30V. They give you a choice of handle materials. Fancy if you want to pay extra. Plainer if you want less expensive. The level of fit and finish on Buck's Custom shop knives rivals that of GEC. Recommended.

Very cool to learn Buck has a custom shop and that's a real possibility. Darn shame they don't offer a lanyard loop or hole or some such.

Some other good suggestions too. Thanks guys.
