Gonna stick with my TGLB order as an all rounder and I'm about to pull the trigger on a Sar8 as a backcountry survival knife. Anyone have any opinions about whether it could also function as a fighter (I gather that some woodscraft knives such as the Basic 9 do not "wield" very well).

Addendum:
Ok, I got a line on a good one so I'm going to have to add a Basic 7 to the lineup. How many times am I going to have to modify this thread.

Wasnt the TGLB desgined as a fighter? If you needed a fighter why not just use it? Also never heard anyone follow the statement of getting 2x Busses with dangit its normally yayyyyyyy. I hope to one day be able to get a SAR4 as its really the only Busse model that hits that must have nerve for me but until then my RMD will work just nicely.

Damn man you're killing me!I bailed too soon on a Sar 8 on an auction site a couple days back.Been kicking my own butt ever since.Congrats, and if you don't love it....

I see the TGLB as a all a rounder and highly capable fighter but, for the backcountry the SAR8 will be serving primarily as a woodscraft knife that should also serve the secondary role of fighter in the event of an unexpected animal (read cougar) attack.

These long slim bladed knives are perfectly suited for killing IMO ...

They can reach all vital organs from any parallel entry ... front or back ... and are slim enough to avoid getting caught on bones for internal artery cuts such as the subclavian which the TG won't do as it is too wide ... have more than enough edge length for cuts to the carotid, brachial and radial arteries ... and if stabbed are going to be far more effective on depth and ease of removal compared to models with wider blades ...

I would say they are some of the best designs in the Busse range for this purpose ...

Yup, this one I'm VERY excited about. Other models I've been tossing around as possibilities have all been significantly compromised in one way or another.

Peter... good pic on the B9 vs. Sar8.

I was going to suggest that the OP look into the basic 10 or 11 as a less expensive alternative. You must be psychotic... er... psychic to have posted that pic just in time. ;)

Ergonomics are a very personal thing. My hand is a glove sized Medium and the sar 4, 6, 8 just didn't work for me. On the other hand (no pun intended) the basic series fits my hand like a it was born there. The Res C also takes a quite a bit more shock out of the knife while batoning and chopping.

BTW... TaiCHi... whatever you decide it might be your second Busse, but it won't be your last Busse. Prepare your credit cards for battle!!! :D

.

I just traded for this B 10 and I can't believe how fast in the hand it is. I would consider it faster than the TGLB.

:D timing is a benefit

Ok, maybe it'll be 3...:o I'm going to snag a B7 while I've got a good specimen in my sights and compare it to the SAR8.
Unfortunately I'm not joking but let's leave it at that. I went through a couple of guns before I settled on my current G17 and a fixed blade is no less important.

Peter, I was wondering about the fire steel issue. I was reading somewhere that the heat generated from a firesteel can be enough to damage the temper of a blade. I assume that's when using the cutting edge but still...have you not found this something to be careful about?

If by killing you mean Hog hunting. Be careful when you stick it in. That Choil can get caught and that knife will get ripped out of your hand.

Don't have a Sar 8, but the Sarge-7 is a sweet knife. It's thick at the spine but the flat grind makes it more than just a chopper. The hollow handle gives it great ballance. You should pick up one of the double cut ones while they're cheap.

Why not get a Sar8 fighter variant? Best of both worlds.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether the fighter variant would give anything up in terms of wood craft (batoning and chopping). The fighter aspect is secondary to to these but still important.

you'd give up some tip strength, swing weight, and a good chunk of extra $ more than likely. I think the standard SAR8 will stab just fine

I think The Basic 9 would be good for my uses. It feels light and quick but can chop and whater you need it to do. I got to handle a basic 7 and like the 9 better. Just me though.
