Where does the turtle shell come from? My understanding is that it's completely illegal to harvest, so I suppose they are all taken from old artifact - but what kind?

Thanks,

Joss

Probably combs and brushes and such - the handles of which were often crafted from tortoise.

How big are the sections? Old razors, knives, medical instruments, desk(and vanity) sets, etc... all used it at one time.

Perhaps there are stocks of pre-ban shell still available?

Spotted horn can also be used to fake a shell look.

It's probably the most sought-after or highly-regarded material for a folder. I'm sure because of the scarcity. It's sketchy crossing borders with it. Be careful.

Bruce Evans made some faux tortise with translucent cowhorn, dye & gold leaf. (not my best pic :( )
Keep an eye out for those old brush and comb sets, could be worth a knife :D
