Hi guys!!! Boy, clicking on this forum has just added another whole relm to my knifemaking adventures. You guys are truly amazing artists! I'm just trying to make my sheaths a little nicer and more sturdy, so I took some guys advice in the knifemaking forums and came over here to ask a few questions, and after looking at some of you guys sheaths......well, I'm amazed!

What I'm looking for is some kind of tutorial with alot of pictures on how to make a simply fold over sheath. I have had some complaints that my knives are cutting the laces. I do put a welt in them, but it is still happening way to often. I've found some tutorials that have alot of reading, but not much as far as step by step pictures. I would put a pic in of my sheaths, but I cant figure out how to. Anyone got any good links to any good tutorials? Went back threw the threads but couldn't find any.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, you mentioned that your knives are cutting the lace. Without seeing one of your sheaths I'm just guessing, but since you lace, I'm wondering if you completely assemble the sheath using good CONTACT CEMENT and make sure everything is set BEFORE you lace??? If not then the welt is free to drift and shift a little providing just enough of a little opening for the sharp pointy part to slip through between the welt and the sheath and get your lace.

Sheathmaker. That may be, I have just been using regular wood glue to hold everything in place while I stitch it up. Guess it is time to dedicate a whole drawer to sheath making and get some more equipment. I have thought about getting the cement every time I go thru my Jantz catalog, but figured the glue was doing a good enough job of holding the pieces in place while I sew it up. I never thought of the cement as being a necessary part. I did just order a sheath making DVD "set of two dvd's" from smartflix. I'm hoping it will give me alot of info. Thanks for the input.

Dave, The highest recommendation I can give for a sheath making tutorial, is a DVD by Chuck Burrows (Wild Rose Trading Post in Durango, Colorado) Chuck uses the name Wild Rose on his postings and can be found in many areas on this forum where he is a moderator. Do a search for his name and you will arrive at a wealth of information from a man that is a legend in period knife and leather construction, a gentleman without peer in his field of expertise. ---Sandy---

If it's my DVD (sounds like it) after watching if you have any questions ask away. What Paul said is correct - gluing the welt is IMO VEY important....

For several online tutorials, including some of mine, - see http://www.knivesby.com/knifemaking.html, just scroll daow until you reach the sheath making section....

Howdy Sandy - looks like you and I were posting at the same time.....

+1 on the C. Burrows DVD. Worth every penny and will save you time by shortening the learning curve. Wish I had bought it before I started cutting leather.

Wild Rose, thank you very much for the offer of help. These forums are a wonderful thing. Thanks everyone for the input.
