I haven't heard this discussed here yet, so I thought I'd let you guys know about a show on "MOJO" called Survival School. It is a HD series following several airmen through the Air Force SERE School. Here is a link to the first episode from the network's website.

For those of you without access to this channel, we will add it to our lineup as soon as it comes out on DVD.

Very odd...SERE is usually kept as one of those things you're not supposed to talk about nowadays if you've been through it. Their training goes quite a bit beyond wilderness survival, it's the sections that teach about torture in POW situations and...dealing with your captors that they try not to spread around in the public. Survival-Evasion-Resistance-Escape. Out of those four, one could be public knowledge because it's simple self-preservation. The others deal with more charged issues that aren't exactly entertaining. It's the top training in the matter on the planet, but it's still something they won't be able to fully show on any channel. It's one thing to show guys eating tree bark and bugs, but they won't be advertising 'Waterboarding day' anytime soon.

I thought that was pretty interesting! VERY good video quality, and i can't wait for episode 2!

I thought the idea of tieing your knife when your skinning! never thought of that! I am not a hunter though... :p

Alex -

I've seen a couple of other episodes, and it appears they are only covering the "wilderness survival" aspects of SERE.

I don't know if they'll put additional episodes online.

An acurate point but IMHO there are a few people from U.S.A. that wish they had access to much of this information before they were kidnapped and tourtured insted of waiting and hoping for rescue. I recal seing a Army General who came to the sporstman range on a reguyar bases to practice with his General oficer model Colt he never went any where without it , that General was the one who was kidnaped by the red brigade in Italy and woulg have been executed but his executioner lost heart at the last minute.
My point here is that we never know what is instore for us in a worst case senario so if we can glen a litle inel of the tube I say show it I can always turn off the parts that ofend or shock me or turn it off as can anyone else.

SERE training is truly invaluable. However some portions of the training are classified and are not intended for public consumption. I really dont think we would be well served to have some of our societys skells trained in escape and evasion techniques. There would not be a single K9 officer feeling secure in such a situation.

I watch the show but it seems to me that they deal more with the dramatic aspects of the course than dealing with skills.

I think I only learned one thing in the 4 episodes I watched, when the airman chopped down a young tree. He cut it in logs and then split one of the logs in to quarters and further split the wood into kindling and shavings for making a fire. He was able to start a fire from one dead tree. That was new to me.

I agree, it would be better if the show focused more on the skills portion. I will watch the next few if I can find them online but I wasn't all that impressed by the episode posted.

This isn't a show on the SERE course it is about the "Instructor" course. These are the people who teach the class. SERE instructors go through this course before they become instructors and get that pewter beret and SERE Instructor tabs. The actual SERE course for Pilots and aircrew etc.. is like 2-4 weeks depending on the classification. That is why they have Axes and Shovels etc. I have heard many a story of students getting lost and Instructors having to build shelters to keep people alive. FYI.
