That is kind of a Busse thing - pretty much all their knives have that. They call it a 'talon hole'. One could use it to attach a d-guard to the knife, but otherwise it's a visual detail.
As for the toughness of Busses... well, there is a reason why they have the kind of warranty they do. They are extremely tough knives. Actually, I don't know of any knife that's tougher that still holds an edge like a knife should.
