For your consideration below is a Twisted Damascus Quillon Dagger that I have been working on off and on for 18 months. This has been one of the most challenging knife projects that I have taken on in my knife making experience. I am currently building a display case for the knife and will add a few pictures of it when I’m finished with it.

Thanks for stopping by.
Ken

Fine looking dagger, very nicely proportioned and great Damascus....superb. :)

Hmmmmm. Does that piece have a particular purpose for being other than merely looking good?:D

Thanks everyone for the positive comments.
jdm61, This was a practice effort to made an ABS Mastersmith Dagger. I hope to test for that in the future.

Lovely dagger, I'm just not sure about the proportions, think the pommel needs some more flare to it to balance the piece out. Great job though, you certainly have the skills down for it.

Pure sex Ken - good job. I like the equal symmetry of the twist damascus

Getting the centerline to run right through the eyes in the Damascus is great. Incredible detail.

Here are a few pictures of the nearly completed display case. I'm waiting on the tempered glass, seem my local glass company had to order it. This case can be either be used on a table top display or can be hung on the wall. There is a magnet installed under the ricasso area to hold the dagger in place. This has been my first attempt at making a display case, I think it turned out well.

Since you're working toward developing your MS dagger, I'll throw in -- what I hope is -- some constructive feedback.

Ken, first off, this is a great piece of work. From what I can tell, your damascus looks good, your grinds seem clean and symmetrical, and your fit-and-finish appear well executed.

There are, however, a few (subjective) things that I feel could be improved.
  • The first area that jumps out at me from the photos is the ricasso. It seems, proportionally, too long... and maybe just a tad too narrow given the handle. The ricasso/plunge transition looks like it may have been designed to line up with the front edge of the quillons; however, it just seems out of balance to me.
  • Speaking of quillons... I think that you could have done more with these. The broad right angles at the end seem like they could be made more appealing... maybe incorporating piercings or other decorative shaping to break things up.
  • Finally, concerning right angles... it seems like the crispness of the lines on this dagger don't balance from end to end. The lines of the blade, ricasso, and guard/quillons appear to be shaped very crisp and sharp. Conversely, the shaping of the handle (grooves), ferrule and pommel seem a bit soft and washed out.
That being said, this seems to be a solid piece of work that shows that you're well on your way (and is far beyond anything I could pull off). Nice job Ken!:thumbsup:

Erin, Much of this build was a first, so I think it turned out well. I've learned things that I would do differently on the next one. Over all I am pleased with the proportions of the daggers. Seems that you have some good ideas that you can used on a dagger of your own.
Thanks,
Ken
