For the first time in weeks I worked on some swords I was building last night. I've been busy (thank God) .. Anyway I was making a woven basket for the guard and then started playing with twists. The thought occured to me that it would look neat to take two bars of steel, do a tight twist and hammer weld the twists.

The thought also occured to me that someone if not everyone was doing the same thing. Remember, I'm new to damascus making. Anyone done this? Any pitfalls?

Peter, Im not sure what you mean by "hammer weld" but I have taken twist damscus and forge welded it to more twist damascus. Its hard to see but the dagger on my banner has 8 bars of twist damascus welded together and shaped into a bar. For a really neat look use 2 twisted bars but twist one of them in the opposite direction, making sure to have the same number of layers and twists. Square them and forge weld them together. If you like that look, do the same thing with 6 or 8 opposing twisted bars. Now you have a truly unique complicated piece of damascus but it possible after you have the basics down.

Thanks Bruce. What I ment was to tack weld two bars together and twist them before I forge weld them.
