Twists and turns on the slipjoint collectors path

Over the last few years my collecting of slipjoints has taken a few turns.
I started and remain a firm believer in the Swiss Army Knife, for it's utility
it cannot be matched, the fit, finish, and quality is legend.

But along the way there have been a few other slippies and patterns that have got my attention and pocket time.

First it was Trappers. I like a large-ish blade for work and also for food prep if I'm away from home and the trapper filled that roll nicely.
Then I figured the trapper was just a tad too heavy for my pocket on an EDC basis so I looked at the Mini-Trapper...I liked them...a lot...But I missed the bottle and can opening ability of my SAK's.
I did much the same with Stockmen, Sowbelly's, Sodbusters, you name it.

Almost by accident I came across the British Army Knife (BAK)... I loved it.
It was sharp, built like a tank, easy to open, had a can/bottle opener, and a bail.
And it was English....Like me! :)
I'm currently EDCing the BAK 90% of the time now but I still enjoy digging out a stockman or trapper or a stayglow tinker just to break the week up a bit.

I've concluded that there is no one knife for me, though the BAK and SAK come close, but they haven't the beauty of a nice Case stockman or trapper.

Seems I'm doomed to follow...not the 'Yellow Brick Road'....but the long, twisting, wonderful path of a slipjoint collector.

I am of much the same mind. I have accumulated a couple of nice traditional slipjoints that I love for their aesthetics, and some multitools for their comprehensive versatility, but I almost always reach for a SAK for sheer utility and easy carrying. I seem just as likely to need to turn screws as to cut something, so I like the extra implements. My Wenger SI that I got in a trade awhile back has mostly banished the others to the drawer, although my peanut goes to work with me in dress pants.

I kind of hate to admit the same thing. I mainly carry a Vic Cadet,

I usually have a sak and a traditional pocket knife on me. I like them both alot but if I had to choose I would go with the sak.

knives are like guns to me in the sense that i wander all over the place but there are certain patterns of both i always come back to.
slipjoints, in particular: trappers, stockman, peanuts,SAKs but only victorinox
sooner or later i always come back to these. it's an interesting trip though.

I like everything about the Scout pattern EXCEPT the bail, which always seems cheap to me. I would love to see someone attempt to build one with a thong hole (maybe through the center of an oversized bushing?) in its place.

We are of a similar mind. I edc the same. it is just handy. I don't use the can opener much, but both blades and the bottle opener are in constant use. That and the ability to turn screws(both large and small). I would like a more aesthetically pleasing package, but I don't want to give up the screw driver options/bottle opener with a small and regular blade.

The s&M posted above has me thinking though.

I was confused by this thread at first... I thought it was our old pal "jackknife," but evidently there's a new "jacknife" in town. Welcome, jacknife 2!

Well thank-you, but I've been around here some time.

It's kind of like the Victorinox/Wenger thing.

One is the Original...One is the Genuine. ;) :)

Haha, sorry about that. Just looked at your post count, instead of the date joined. Didn't mean to infer that you're less "original" or "genuine" at all, this was just the first time I noticed there are two of you! :)
...maybe you've both been fooling me all along! ;)

I think that this is the curse of our affliction, the never ending search for that holy grail, what may not even exist. The perfect pocket knife. We all have tried many patterns, many makers, and it never quite stills the restless search within us. Sak's, GAK's, BAK's, peanuts, sodbusters, barlows and trappers. Knife knuts are a never satisfied bunch.

But its a funny thing. In spite of my knife taste wondering all over knifedom, I never stray from having a scout pattern or sak around. Maybe all those years ago in the scouts made a deeper mark than I thought. The Wenger Si I carry now, the Victorinox pioneer I carried for years, are the same layout as the scout knife my dad gave me when I was 12 years old.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same."

No offence taken friend

There is only one jackknife

That man writes stuff we all wished we'd said ourselves. I find myself agreeing with darn near everything he says.
