Twitch II de-assist

Hey everyone- just wondering if it would be possible to de-assist a SOG Twitch II? I like the look of the knife but I'm not too keen on assisted knives. If anyone has de-assisted one, does it help with blade play and is it still smooth to open with both the flipper and thumbstuds? Thanks everyone!

I don't know for sure but I doubt it. The problem would be there most likely is no closing detent. This means the knife wouldn't stay closed.

Yea I figured that would be an issue.. I know some knives rely on the spring tension to keep closed as well but some can still stay closed without the spring. Figured I would check if anyone knew which kind of knife this was!

Does anybody know for certain that this would not work because they have tried it?

Well, look at the the mechanism. My thoughts are no, it wouldn't work. The only knives I have had that I have de-assisted all had a detent that would engage when the knife closed, irrespective of the assisting mechanism. These knives were a CRKT Hissatsu folder, ZT 0566, & a Kershaw Blur. All were great de-assisted but I knew they would work that way based on the fact that they had a detent ball with a detent whole drilled for when the blade is closed. I have taken apart my SOG Flash II and I do not recall a way for it stay closed without the spring tension of the SAT mechanism. I'll email Chris to see if he can chime in.

Thanks Craytab- I wasn't doubting you, I was just curious if anyone had actually taken one apart and it turns out you had!! Ha

No worries! I haven't taken apart a twitch. It was a flash. That said I would bet the mechanism to be very similar.

Yes, he said it would work without the assist spring! I don't know how as I have never held the knife. Also, taking it apart might void the warranty. That said, looks like you could give it a try!

Very interesting! Does he have a thread or anything relating the the deassisted Twitch II? This is why I love this forum- you can find the answer to anything!

Why would you disable one of the main selling points of that knife?

Wouldn't it be easier (on your mind and in terms of effort) to sell it or trade it and get a knife that doesn't have assisted opening?

It seems to me like you bought a wheel and want to square-off the rounded edge to make it less effective at rolling. Why not trade the wheel for a square?

I haven't bought the knife- I like the look of it but I like non assisted knives better. There are several people who buy knives based on looks and then alter one thing or another to better suit their preferences. In my mind there are several other "selling points" that would make this knife worth buying even if it wasn't assisted opening.. I like full flat ground blades, the wood handles on the new model or the metal on the older both look really nice, a deep carry pocket clip... These points alone would make spend the amount that is shown on the price tag

T_MAC686 put it quite well but I will echo his thoughts. Some people don't like assisted knives. If the design is appealing for other reasons and the assist can be removed, it can be a big win. I bought a ZT 0566 knowing I would be de-assisting it. If I knew I couldn't de-assist it successfully I wouldn't have bought it.

Not to mention I just like the feel of a manual opening better. In my mind, I feel like I have more control over the blade. Some spring assists are so strong it feels like the knife wants to jump out of your hand. Im not saying the Twitch 2 would be like that because I have never handled the knife in person so I dont know how strong the spring is.

I've bought two SOG assisted openers and got rid of both. I've bought three SOG non-assisted folders
and still have all three. My Kershaws, ZT and BMs are better A/Os in my opinion.

I've got the Spec Elite II as well and it is fantastic, large, but fantastic. I had a large Vulcan Tanto but sold it. I didn't like the pocket clip. It was too long so that when I gripped the knife I could feel it move under my hand. If I had more patience I would have switched out the clip for one from the Flash but it would have taken a significant mod. I had too many other projects going so I sold it. Might buy it again someday and try again. The Arch lock is on par with the Axis lock in my mind. The Seki folders are of great quality.
