Just finished these. Both are just over 5" total with saw steel blades and deer leg bone for handles. The S guard was not in the plan but the more I looked at them the more I thought, why not. I've always liked S guards, don't see many makers using them. I'm probably alittle off. What do you guys think????

The bottom knife is very simular to the S guard ones and is what my plan was until my eyeball took over....

it looks like the bottom of the S may interfer with the reach of the blade.but they sure look cute :)

I agree, your a little off:D

Those do look good though, bone is fast becoming one of my favorite handle materials, following close behind horn.

Richard those rock! The S guards just make the knife for me, the deer handle really fits. It's not every day you can make a deer bone work for anything. Great knives! The ring through the tang nut is a great idea.

Who said I was a little off? Your right!

I to like the bottom one although I spent more time on the top one or at least thats the way it seemed. The bottom one was the first and I liked it so much had to try another. Probably not a very practicle design for using since these were made more to please my eye. If I still have them next Christmas I'll hang them on the tree. The bone that I used for the handles is the upper front leg bone and I didn't get but just a few of these. Next year when its bone season I'll know to get more. Got mainly rear leg bone since they are larger.

Hope you guys are having a Merry Christmas! Ray

Ray;
Do you make the tang nut or buy them? Either way, can you give me some info? Paul

Raymond.....very nice knives...the tang nut with the ring is the perfect touch! What material did you use for the ring and how did you attach it to the nut. I hope that my questions are not out of line. I am a new member, 12 21 02. I have been building knives for about a year now...best thing that has happen to me in some time. Thank you. Jack.

Greetings Ray, at the risk of being the first naysayer... I have to say that I don't like the S-guards. However, I love the look of the rest of the knives. They have a nordic knife kinda feel to them. I think they would work well with a nice traditional nordic sheath, and could be used as a neck knife. Nice work with the deer bone too. Try one or two without the guard and post some pics.

Mongo, These were going to go without the S guard until the "Lets do this" hit me. I've got a picture of three I did awhile back. I'll see if I can find it and I'll post it in this thread....

The ring nuts I make. On these it starts out of 3/8" 60 grade rebar. I drill and tap it and then shape it ruffle on the grinder and then put it on my drill press and finish it off. They don't turn out perfect but work just fine for my threw tang knife construction. The ring itself is welding rod but I think cloths hanger would work just as well.

Ray.These are really COOL looking.They would make really cool Neck knives I bet,Or Tree ornaments:D as you suggested..
Can't wait to get to see them in person,That is if you still have them next week.
