two bladed slipjoint?

Hi all.

I'm looking for a two bladed slipjoint. I'm looking specifically for a pen blade and the other can be either a spear/clip/wharncliffe.

I'd like either wood, bone or stag.
I'd like Carbon Steel, prefer 1095 over D2

I'm considering a few from Case with the CV blades. Is the CV steel any good? Patina easily and take a reasonable edge?
models I'm considering
Small Texas Jack #077 (63032 CV)
Hunter Trapper #149 (6354GS SS) (more as a edc knife)

also considering Queen Cutlery models
2ACSB SERPENTINE
69 STRAIGHT JACK

Any other companies I should look at?

I'm hoping to get away with not much over 100.

Cheers all

I love the Case texas jack. Bone, CV, great size, two great blades and very affordable. I think I paid right around $37 shipped.
I happen to be carrying mine today.

You should also check out GEC's #66, #56, #73, and #48 jacks.

Here are my 56's, #73, and #48. I still need to get a #66 myself.

Good advice. The Texas jack hoopster shows is a mighty fine knife. But if you have a budget of up to $100, you could get an insanely sweet GEC. Do a Google search for "Great Eastern Tidioute Jack Knife 661210."

I forget, do the GEC #66's have half stops? I really like the snakewood #66 but can't justify one right now being so similar to my Texas jack in function. I do wish the Texas Jack had half stops but I know some folks prefer not to have them.

If you don't mind the blades opening from opposite ends (the others you listed were jacks, so I don't know if that's your preference), consider a half congress, such as the GEC #61. Large sheepsfoot main blade, pen secondary. Both ride on the same single spring, so it's slim.

And of course, there's the favorite of so many of us here, the Case Sway Back Jack in chestnut bone and CV steel.

Eric,
The #66 patterns do not have half stops. At least the Serpentine Jacks and the Calf Ropers do not.
I assume the #66 Mink Skinner doesn't either but I've never handled one.

Another vote for the Case Texas Jack. Here's mine, showing each blade deployed:

If you don't mind going a little smaller, the Case Peanut is a good little knife. Comes in CV with various handle materials.

I have to agree with the others about giving GEC a look. Something else to consider would be the Barlow pattern. I've been pleased with this Boker that I picked up a while back. It sharpens up nicely and has started a decent patina considering it's limited use.

Case has some Barlow patterns with the clip main and some with the spear main, if you'd like to take a look at them. I have a couple of Boker Barlows in carbon steel that I like quite a lot:

There are indeed a lot of possibilities out there from Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Kabar, GEC, Case, Boker, and others.

The Case Texas jack you mention is great knife; I don't think you can go wrong with it.

Take a look in this thread and you may find something that strikes your fancy.

Thanks for the info Rick. Even without the half stops, the GEC serpentine jack still tempts me.:)

Thanks for the help guys, I really dig this one.

I'll be looking into my local dealer see if he can get the GEC knives.

The Queen gunstock pattern should also fit your requirements - but it is D2 steel. D2 is more difficult to sharpen, but holds an edge for a long time. Northwoods has a very similar knife. I have one, and like it.

I'd go with a GEC given your price range for a 2 blade knife I'm pretty fond of the #12 powderhorn jack and #56 dogleg jack also if your looking for something a bit smaller theres always the #33 conductor pattern.

GEC doesn't usually make too many knives of a particular type in a single run. Its usually around 25 serialized and maybe that many unserialized. Your best bet would be to look up their different dealers:

I know other handle materials they made besides my Green jigged bone include Glitter Gold Acrylic, Burnt Stag, Cherry jigged bone and there was a short run of these in Snakewood:

Edit: I also have my first #66 Jack on the way. I'll post a pic once I get it.

That snakewood is a beauty. So that is a #48?

My dealer had an account with BlueRidgeKnives, not sure if he still does I'll have a look.

I'd be after that pattern in stag, cherry jigged bone or some form of wood

cheers

I'm growing quite attached to my Case Damascus Peanut, awesome little folder! As Carl said in an earlier thread,"it's a toothy little nut".Or something like that.-Jim

Right. GEC's Slimline or Dogleg Trappers as they call them begin as #48. This includes regular trappers, single blade trappers, western trappers (different blade shapes) and the jacks. Below are links to the announced handle materials for the jacks (as far as I know). I believe the snakewood is the only wood and only available at a single dealer. I don't believe it was announced. Its a short run of under 10 I believe. If you're interested, shoot me an email and I'll send you a link.
