This is a bit off track, but I thought this might be the right audience to appreciate it. This is a little piece of fossil amber I just purchased; it shows a scene from ~20 million years ago of two ants locked in mortal combat. It appears that they are fighting over the remains of a moth(?) and I like to imagine that one of the little warriors is avenging the death of his brother-colonist who lies to the right:

One can't help but admire these fighters, whose resolve is worthy of the Ghurkas and of all brave soldiers everywhere, as we in the States honor them this Memorial Day. They could have run from the oncoming resin, but they chose instead to battle to the bitter end.

I hope I don't sound strange for saying it, but these ants really kindle the martial spirit! Wouldn't this make a cool Khukuri pommel?

The ants may well have been battling for rights to the moth that was trapped in the sticky stuff in the first place. That is one special piece of amber.

For a larger scale and (literally) blacker view of the same phenomenon, visit the Ice Age Museum at the La Brea tar pits here in Los Angeles, CA. Lots of wolves and bears and saber tooth kitties have been excavated there, who had come for the mammoths and ground sloths and such who got stuck in what looked like an ordinary slimy water hole.

Perhaps the scene also shows the futility of war. All the collective hate leads us to the believe that the Angel of Death (or Mother Kali?) needs the help us mortals, or otherwise in a hundred and twenty years our enemies might still be alive!

Here the utterly impartial Reaper came, in the form of something that other creatures eons later would see as a thing of beauty, and took them both in mid-combat.

The ants from rival anthills had neither the wit nor the freedom to unite against a common foe. Do we?

So why do I practise and practise the above, yet only get the respect due a fellow member of humanity returned when I strap a matching pair of 41 Mag's on each hip?

To misquote Al Capone ... Charity and love and a pair of .41 Magnums will get you farther than charity and love alone.
