Here's a maker who, at this point, is more well known in Europe and Asia than here in the states.
Thita Knives is a group of four guys doing various tasks working under an incredible knifemaker, Suchat Jangtanong, to produce really great knives. Let's look at my experience on three seperate experiences;
1. Prompt, thoughtful communications
2. Great sense of design structured around customer requests
3. Willingness to go the extra yard; way more than was necessary
4. Using first rate materials; pearl, stag, burl...
5. Delivering at or before stated time (!)
6. Really incredible pocket clips
D)
I picked up some bars of damascus from Robert Eggerling (might be the nicest guy in the knifemaking biz) and sent it to Thailand. This is the second time sending steel to Thita, both times seamless.
After receiving a really incredible folder some months back from Thita made from the first batch of steel, the second group of bars were sent for two purposes...a balisong and the bolsters on a chef knife! And several months later they arrived!
The balisong is just incredible...the quality is beyond reproach; easily in the top 10% of the custom balisongs I have handled. The ingenious spring (!) latch has a tight click to it both opened and closed; the beautifully sculpted pocket clip, though in a position I've never seen before, works perfectly (I think I'm a convert...); the grind on the blade is a swooping distal tamper and scary sharp; the carving on the blade, bolsters and pearl is flowing and beautifully done. The titanium liners are subtly anodized and the damascus is etched black and white to blend with the pearl. Note both the latch and pocket clip are damascus. Just beautiul!
Note how well it matches with the folder
And the chef knife is not only a work of art in ATS-34, burl and Eggerling damascus...but without question the sharpest chef knife I have ever handled (Thita warned me). The grind is such that one cannot even feel the taper, though it indeed tapers to a broken-glass sharp edge. While designing it Thita would send a drawing, which I would modify, and he would send back a correction...the whole process took merely several weeks. What a great knife to use!
It's such a pleasure to find out-of-the-box designs such as these, to find a maker that's really anxious to work with a collector, and to deliver exceptionally built knives...I just had to share...

Thanks again to Thita knives for two incredible knives!
