12C27 is a Sandvik steel. It is pretty good. It is not a super steel, but it is good. It is more rust resistant than 420HC takes a screaming sharp edge. Kershaw used to use it more until they changed to 14C28N. I have a couple of knives in the steel and they do pretty well. It is similar to 420 HC but without the vanadium and similar to 440A and etc. However, it is more pure than those steels, can take high hardness, and performs a bit better because of the purity.

Thanks Doc. Kinda of a cool stocking stuffer.

Someone remind me, what what the man in hat series about?
Nice stocking stuffer for sure, Makael.

There was one the same size as the 112/ranger, but can't remember the model number. IIRC, the model numbers did not jive with the same knife in Buck's regular line.

It was the 112 IBEX in black paperstone. The model numbers were the same, it was the names that were changed. When discontinued by Cabela's, Buck cleared them out as a Web special late 2013 for $18. What a deal. There was also the 475 TSIU with a black Dymondwood handle. It came with a diamond sharpener and sold for $20 on clearance. Those were the good old days for web specials. All the Shockey Signature Series knives were black and sported his profile on black oxide coated blade and 12C27 steel.

Knew there was a difference, were these even out very long? I remember thinking they were priced a little high when they first came out.

At that price with nylon sheaths and black oxide coated blades and made in USA, what a great deal. I would tell people that is John Wayne on the blade

Lol. It would be cool if he was

They were introduced with Cabela's at the 2010 Shot show and finished out on the Buck web specials page at the end of 2013.

It's a little odd that you rarely see one for sale on ebay or for that matter anywhere. Thanks for posting them as I had completely forgotten about that model. I'll need to find the blackpaperstone 112 for my collection!

Too lazy to get off the sofa to find my notes but I think the production number for Cabela's was only about 600 each.

Don't want to change focus of the OP thread, but it did have angle of getting knives on sale.

In the spirit of Christmas, I used my Buck discount and bought the local Scoutmaster a dozen Buck 284s, in orange, to give out as awards to his troop. You run on to any good deals and know someone leading any young person organization where a knife would not be a 'wrong' award you might consider the same while they were on sale. 300
