Greetings all,
Here's a look at some recent additions to the stable. Whenever you combine the words "stag" "Bowie" and "Newton", you get my undivided attention. This piece did.
This bowie sports a blade of forged 52100, 8 3/4" in length, 13 1/2" overall. The sheath - an absolutely first rate piece of work with ostrich overlay - is by the maker himself.
The stag handle features 360 degrees of knobby goodness:
The fittings (guard, ferrule and butt cap) are "blued" but the colour is closer to a deep slate grey. The ferrule is engraved on both sides with a gold-inlayed dogwood blossom:
There is also gold-inlayed engraving on the spine, but my pics of that did not turn out. Overall, typical Newton awesomeness:
I have been tremendously impressed by every piece I have seen from John Horrigan and pretty much figured that sooner or later one of his fine bowies would land on my doorstep. Well, it's going to be a bit later yet, 'cause this piece is definitely not a bowie and definitely not part of my usual fair at all.
But I have always wanted one of these things.
They just look SO cool and feel so very menacing in hand..
Then this one popped up for sale by fellow forumite, at a very reasonable price and by a maker who was already making a very large blip on my radar screen...
So I pulled the trigger....
and KACHOW!
Hawk me, baby.
That's a big hunk of blued S-7 that bites at both ends. It spans 10" in length with a 4" cutting edge. The spike is needle sharp.
The handle is 19" of primo fiddleback maple, embellished with carved feathers on both sides.
To keep this beautiful beast from accidentally biting its master, a neat leather sheath / cap covers its fangs.
Thanks for taking a look, and thanks to Murray for shooting the hawk for me.
Roger
