Looking forward to getting these outside and seeing how they perform:

Blindhorse Bushcrafter and BRKT Highland Special

Does the top one have a coating on the blade?

Blindhorse uses cold blue, like you would use to touch up the blueing on a firearm. When it gets worn, you can get a bottle of cold blue from wally world or elsewhere, remove oil from the blade, use cloth with a little cold blue and wipe.

Is the blueing an aesthetic choice, or does it protect rust or something? Nice knives.

Its a bit of both. These bushcrafter were made by recycling old carbon steel saw mill blades. But I imagine the blueing was to make the knife stick out amoung it peers. I believe the orginal proto had a highly polished blade. The new bushcrafter uses different materials. Decidedly more modern w/ O1 steel (no finish) and green micarta handle scales.

I have an orginal #020 and it is one of my holy grail knifes :).

Great blades. I have a bhk bushcrafter on order, I really like the design.

Not all bluing is the same. True bluing is partially effective at resisting corrosion and is the better choice. Cold bluing is either just for cosmetics, to knock the shine off, or a way to bump the price up. The stuff many of us use from a bottle is cold bluing. No idea how that particular piece was done though.

Cold blueing has been used by several Mastersmiths and knifemakers and gunsmiths for years to help protect the steel. Cold blueing does work as does any patina to keep rust at bay. Hot blueing is done as described, the gun/knife is put in a boiling bath of chemicals and soaked to make a darker and richer look. Cold blueing beats raw steel being exposed to the atmosphere...hot blueing is better.

Love the knives. Is the top one, the Blindhorse Bushcrafter ? I've never seen a sheath like that and love the knife; crap, looks like another knife just got added to the wish list. thanks for sharing the pics.

Yes, the top one is the Bushcrafter. That is the sheath that came with it. You need to get one.

Nice !! That HS has been on my radar for quite a while . Looks like a great bush knife . Gotta love black micarta :)

Both of them look pretty good. I like the sheathes as well, they look pretty good.
