Two new Customs

Fed Ex brought me two new customs today. A CQC6 and a CQC8.

Now my question. The CQC8 has a "Benchmade U.S.A." clip on it. Now what's up with that? I thought I'd heard someone else mention the same thing some time ago, but I haven't been able to locate the thread. Has anyone else received a Custom with a benchmade clip; or know anything about this?

Hi Sniper,

I had mentioned in a thread that I had received an Elishewitz Phantom with a Benchmade clip, it was confirmed by Allen that he had in fact used benchmade clips, I've never heard of anything like that on an emerson custom, although I have never actually seen one in person

I don't think that I have ever seen a picture of the clip side of an 8 before for that matter.

That's just not right....

I looked at my knives and both my production CQC7s and my custom CQC6 have sterile BM clips.

It has been my experience that the customs all came with benchmade clips up to the mid 1990s. That was definitely the case on knives I owned that were made before 1995. Sometime around 1996, Ernie started using the "hour-glass" shaped clips that are without a name on them, both in gray and black. These seem vastly superior to the older ones in strength and tension retention. If your custom has what appears to be the original clip and its a benchmade, then you can relax and presume you have an old enough knife for it to be valuable.

Heads up JBravo,
Ernie had a relationship w/ Benchmade.
As most of know he had a deal w/ them for his
CQC 7 model which I believe was designated a 970 BM ... whatever.
He was able to procure a large number of these clips and since think they were just "stamped out" they could be mass produced at a relatively inexpensive rate. They are funtionally fine and do their purpose suffiently. Sometimes they have to be "Tweeked" a little. I think eventually he was able to by pass the BM people and just obtain them w/o their stamp.

JBravo is right on here, It is a sign that your Custom is an older one and by my standards is is more desirable. Some of his newer stuff has his "Skull" insgnia and I have seen that in limited numbers. It looks very cool and is more shaped like an Hour Glass as JBravo stated.
Hope that helps.

I would be wary of determining a knife's age on the clip style alone. I just put a BM clip on my CQC7CN due to personal preference. The holes line up perfectly. I could see a swap being done down the line to fool a unsuspecting collecter.

Please do not misinterpret my post. I in no way meant to imply that was soley the only criteria for evaluating a Custom Emerson.
There are a plehtora of attributes to acknolwledge here. Logo, Grind, temper lines, Buff lines, Screws, G-10 patterns, Handle confogurations,Micarta textures, Coatings, Finishes et al etc. ad nausem. All of these would be taken into consideration and the clip issue is only a indicator of potential circa evaluation. Hope that's clear.
