Wow, two new khukuris in one week -- one 20" Sirupati by Sanu, and one 30" King Kobra by Kumar. Wonderful horn handles on both of these beauties. Thank you yet again, Bill Oji-chan! (I've been keeping them on the coffee table next to the sofa so that I can admire them at will, which has been drawing some funny reactions from my friends.)

But after hearing the very bad news this morning, I was feeling too down-hearted to play with any knives. I took out the Kobra but it just made me sad, since Kumar's marking looks remarkably like a Star of David, and, well, yeah. I'm just soppy. I never actually got to meet Mr. Mattis in person, but I'm still sad.

Then it occurred to me that probably the best thing I could do, considering, would be to play with knives today. Especially with the Kobra. I just think James would have gotten a big kick out of seeing a five-foot woman wielding a two-and-a-half-foot khukuri, though he probably would have called it a "vorpal khukuri" or made some reference to hobbits or something...

Guess I'm a silly mei-chan, but it did make me smile.

I think he would, and not just for novelty value. I think we should all go play with our khukuris and think of Jim Mattis. That seems very appropriate.

A tool is, basically, an object that enables you to take advantage of the laws of physics and mechanics in such a way that you can seriously injure yourself.

I once owned a WWII vintage Bren gun (a 22 LB light machinegun) when these things were non restricted in Canada. I set it up for one of my friends a woman of just over 5' to fire from the hip. It was an interesting sight. When it came my turn to fire it, I forgot that I had set it up for her and the gun almost strangled me when I put the sling over my neck.
