Got two new knives this week: first a Boker Subcom, then a Spyderco D'allara drop point. I was quite impressed with both of them right out of the box, and keep on being more impressed by both. I don't normally carry two locking folders at the same time, but couldn't decide between these two great folders.
First the Subcom. At $30, this knife is the best value I have ever seen in a knife, period! The blade is quite stout and strong, utilizing an almost full flat grind, it cuts like a much larger knife. Made of AUS-8 steel, the blade stays plenty sharp and sharpens back up in a snap. The handle is simple genius. You have to hold one, then you kind of say: "oh, now I see what they're talking about." The large finger choil and wide handle allow you to use the Subcom as if it was a larger knife for a long time. Excellent fit and finish, great edge right out of the box, I would recommend this knife to anyone.
The Spyderco D'allara is an excellent design. The FRN handle has the best ergos I have felt on a Spyderco (I have a big and mini Manix, Endura 4, and a Delica 4). The blade shape is very similar to a beefed up Griptilian, a blade shape I find great for utility. Blade is made of VG-10 (love this steel more and more) and is hollow ground with a low bevel. The Ball bearing lock is amazingly smooth, a tiny bit more than the axis-lock, but a bit harder to unlock because the ball rotates freely. There was absolutely no blade play (as is to be expected from a 3-point lock). The handle has a full metal back spacer that makes it solid as a tank, and two full metal liners to add to the rigidity. This blade is a great all around EDC, very durable and smooth. It is a big folder, but feel great in the hand, and fits the pocket similar to a mini-manix. Great knife, I would buy another Spyderco ball bearing lock in a second, and trust the lock with my fingers.
Two great knives that have kicked my Manix and Griptilian out of the pocket for a while. They cover both ends of the size spectrum, and are both very utility oriented.
