Two New Laconico Backpackers and a Dilimma

Ray just finished a knife that I had him make to my design; I wanted it to be specifically for backpacking, and I wanted it light (I have been really working on reducing my pack weight). It is 5/32" O1 with stick tang, bloodwood handle, 4 1/4" blade with hand-rubbed finish:

Now for the dilemma - Ray also had a surprise for me. He said he was worried about that nice wood handle being banged around in my pack, so he made another stick tang model, this one with 3/16" 1095 blade with machine finish, 4 3/8", and micarta handle. He made it with a frame handle, with micarta inserts filling the gap next to the tang between the micarta scales.

So, I will now have to sit there for a while before each trip to figure out which one I am going to carry.

And here they are with the rest of the family (not including the two that my sons have):

Dang, sometimes life is soooo rough, huh:D Nice collection:thumbup:

I dunno, every time you post a pic of that HWK of yours I get distracted. :o

That micarta one looks like it begs to be a user though! The other one is beautiful, kind of dressy, Like you would wear it to a southern duel.

Both are lovely knives. Those are the kinds of dilema's we get ourselves into once we start collecting and using custom knives

I can solve your dilemma....just send that fancy wood handle one to me so you don't hurt it. :D They are all nice but that one is gorgeous IMO. Congrats.

I think I would like to see that 1095 model without the scales on it. Or perhaps before they were attached. I love the look of it!

What a great problem to have!!! Hopefully one of these days I'll have Ray make a couple knifes for me then I'll have to ponder the same question.

Achingly beautiful! Precise, clean lines and fit. Nothing beats users that are eye-candy too!

Both are very nice. I could see carrying both, scratches or not. It is a very hard wood, after all.

Oh Ray, I'm worried about mine getting scratched up.....

Your collection is growing! What a dilemma- any one of those can be used for backpacking. However, there's one that I designed and made especially for backpacking. It think is the lightest (for it's size) knife that I've ever made. The blade is 4.5" long, 3/16" thick. The blade has just the right taper, and that shape is almost perfect! It is made to be a user with the micarta handle and machine finish.. It may look very simple but a lot of thought went into the design and construction of that knife. Of course they are all users as John has no "safe queens"!

Those are some gorgeous looking blades, love them all, especially the bottom one.
