Well the 5 and 15 showed up a day early. Still waiting on the 4.

First impressions.

5

It's big. Almost as big as the nine but feels much lighter and nimble for its size. The blade itself seems very substantial and I'm sure can take more abuse than I will ever put it through. I think it's the balance of the blade compared to the nine that gives it an almost light feel. Luckily it's a stamped version with the smooth coating so that will save me a step when I strip it.

15

Why did I wait so long to buy a tweener. The handle seems comfortable for close work. Nice size right between my 11 and 9. This knife will defiantly see some belt time. Seems perfect for fishing, prep work, or everyday use. It has the rough coating on it which will have to go. The sheath looks like it should work fine but this may be my first knife that I buy a custom sheath for. I'm liking this one a lot already.

Upon further review...does anyone know if the micarta scales are any thicker than the stock ones on the 15? I'm finding them to be just a little thin for me. Maybe I'm just used to the nine but I think a little thicker would feel about perfect.

Micarte usually is a little thicker. You should just make some liners first. That way you know what you want without spending much money.

Time to rummage around the house for some liner material. And the wife wonders why I never throw anything away. Of course I can't find anything because I've got too much crap laying around.

Do you guys have any links for a how-to on liners? I've seen them around here, but I don't quite understand what they're being made from (I've heard several example which have just confused me more).

And congrats, Longneck! Enjoy the new ones. I'm going to order a 15 myself and attempt to do some basic modding (based entirely on what I've seen around the forums).

An old DVD case makes a great, cheap set of liners.

I don't think the tweener micarta is much thicker than the regular handles. Not a noticeable difference anyway. Liners are the way to go.

glad to see you like the new knives!

as far as the 15 thickness, id recommend giving it a couple days use to see how you like them a little more thoroughly, at that point some liners might be a great way to go.

I seem to like thicker handles than some. I love the Becker handle shapes, but both the full sized ones, and the tweeners need liners for my hand to be comfortable.

But yeah, DVD cases, videogame cases, or even those cheap terrible "cutting boards" they sell at places like walmart can be great liners. Basically you just need something the right thickness that you can cut to shape :).

Good call. As I was searching for liner material I thought the same thing. I've been wearing it around the house to try it out and my wife and youngest son (4) came home. He immediately asked about the new knife. Future beckerhead in the making. I was amazed he knew it was new because I never said anything to him about getting a new knife. Loving this knife. The stock sheath isn't as bad as I thought it might be. I was concerned about the two snaps and not being able to quickly access the knife but they are close enough that you can easily unsnap both at the same time. Also it doesn't get in the way when you sit down. Very handy blade!

The 15 and the 5 are sleepers. I have been trying to wake people up to the 5 almost since I started here..lol but the 15 seems to be winning people over to both.
Oddly enough they just arent selling that great, even though everyone who picks one up tends to be won over.

I use the rubber made utensil drawer organizers. They're a good thickness, easy to slice, and very cheap and abundant at thrift stores in a variety of colors. I've found some DVD cases and other things brittle and crack or split easily. Some leave white marks where you trim. The rubber made is more flexible and perfect. For $.25-.50 you can make several sets if you want more or screw up.

If you want a cheap leather sheath get the Ka-Bar short FU sheath. Perfect fit.
Here's my write up on that subject...

Any thin plastic will do - dvd cases, place mats, cutting mats, file folders. And they come in colors so you can a bit of bling if you want.

Your probably also going to need longer hardware as well (screws and bolts). can anyone offer advice on sizing, I havent made a set as yet. Well i made the scales but the stock hardware didnt fit.

Does adding liners affect the stock sheath any? It's already a little tough to close the snaps around the handle but it's also brand new and I'm sure will loosen with use. I was worried that the hardware may come up a little short also. I guess it's project time.

I'm still able to close the snaps on my sheath with the liners on. The nylon will stretch a bit; I think I soaked them in water for a bit before closing them around the knife and leaving it for a few days. Works great now. As for screws, if you can find 5/8" it should fit perfect with the liners. I couldn't find that length in stainless so I bought 3/4" and trimmed them down with a dremel.

I use #8-24 or #8-32 bolts, either works as long as you get the matching nuts.
I couldn't find 5/8 either so I used 3/4
