Trying to achieve something new here. Some knives that look 'old'. When I forged the blades, on the very last heat, I pulled the dampers off the forge burners to get a bit of scale on the blade and hammered the scale into the blade to create the pits. Then, I chemically removed to scale, polished to blades to a mirror shine before heat treat. After the HT, I went back to a mirror finish on the Winkler-style hunter. I did the same to the skinner and then chemically 'aged' it for the old time patina. The hunter has poured pewter bolster and stabilized spalted maple handle. The skinner has a brass guard and Sambar Stag Crown for the handle. Both will be offered for sale sometime this winter after I make the sheaths.

I like the "aged" look, Jacque. Also, the fitup on that brass guard is looking good and snug as well.

- - - - - What steel are you using on those?

5160 spring steel. mirror finish on the hunter - on the left side of the blade you can see the reflection of the a/c vent in the ceiling. the skinner has a 'Wayne Goddard method' old time patina. I'm undecided on which I prefer.

Thanks to all for the comments.

I've been thinking about the hunter for a month and have decided to put the 'olde time patina' on it also. The more I look at it, it just doesn't look right with the mirror finish. Since it's a Winkler style hunter, I think a Shook style sheath will make the package look right.

Your comments are appreciated.

Just my two cents, but I sorta like the mirror finish effect on the hunter. In any event they both look great.

finished the sheath for the skinner - it's based on a sheath for the Jim Pugh hunter in my collection. And the knife is sold (as soon as I collect the $$)
