Many people think of Strider knives as being first and foremost big. Period.

That's not, strictly speaking, true. While Striders with 7-inch-plus blades are certainly extremely large knives, Mick Strider has always recognized the wisdom of carrying more than one knife.

That's why Strider offers the concealable backup series, consisting of smaller knives with 3 1/2 inch to 4 inch blades, although knives in this series, while small by the usual Strider standards, are not, compared to knives in general, small knives.

They are, after all, Striders. So they are built like tanks. You still couldn't take one of these out into polite society. That small they ain't.

The Strider WP series consists of the next smaller line of Strider knives. Their blades are 3.5 inches long and their overall length is 7 1/2 inches. Whether Strider WPs are suitable to carry in polite society is an open question. Size-wise, they shouldn't arch any eyebrows. But is it possible for Mick Strider to produce a politically correct knife? Apparently not, regardless of size.

Because, regardless of size, a Strider is a Strider: aggressive, overbuilt, with combat blade geometry that's as beautiful as it's deadly. There is nothing subtle about what a WP is designed to do. The grippy paracord-knotted handles have a quality craftsman look and feel, but they are all business.

That business is probably more utility oriented than larger Striders--although, heck, folks use large Striders to chop wood, dig holes, cut cord and wire, and whatever else needs cutting--but I suggest this only because the smaller size of WPs makes them practical to carry outside of a combat zone.

But make no mistake: These are very aggressively designed knives, as the two examples up for sale, the Spaniard and the Spearpoint, will attest.

The Spaniard's blade is made of S30V steel that upsweeps into a Spanish/Persian-style point with a nice show of belly to ease stabbing penetration. The handle is OD paracord.

The thick medial ridge on the blade makes this one weighty knife that feels significant and beautifully balanced in the hand. Comes with a blade Kydex sheath with Tek-Lok fastener for positioning the knife for horizontal or vertical carry.

The Spaniard's blade is sharpened on both lower and upper edges. However, only the lower edge is shaving sharp. The upper edge, while definitely honed, was left slightly dull. Five minutes with your favorite knife sharpener should fix that. Strider apparently wanted to give customers a choice.

Strider WP Spaniard, 3 1/2 inch blade of S30V steel, 7 1/2 inches overall, green paracord handle, black Kydex sheath with Tek-Lok fastener ... $300 shipped Conus. PayPal preferred (I'll eat the 3%) but will take MO.

Also for sale is a Strider WP Spearpoint with the nearly same specs: 3 1/2 inch blade of S30V steel, 7 1/2 inches overall, tan paracord handle, black Kydex sheath with Tek-Lok fastener.

Although Strider calls this a "spearpoint," that's a little misleading: this knife is a gorgeous, rugged, cruel-looking 7 1/2 inch knife with a 3 1/2 inch dagger blade that's nearly narrow enough to be a spike.

Like the Spaniard, both the Spearpoint's upper and lower edges have been honed, but only the lower edge is shaving sharp. The swedge tapers from a 3/16th inch base to a dull edge at the tip. It's easily sharpened, although that would make it illegal for everyday carry in many states.

The blade geometry of the Spearpoint is a thing of beauty. Each side of the blade has three identical facets carved out of solid steel to lend strength to a blade that aggressively narrows to a razor-sharp tip.

While the Spearpoint could handle utility chores with poise and aplomb, it pretty much looks like what it is: a sentry neutralization device and weapon of last resort.

Strider WP Spearpoint, 3 1/2 inch blade, 7 1/2 inches overall, tan paracord handle, black Kydex sheath with Tek-Lok fastener ... $300 shipped Conus. PayPal preferred (I'll eat the 3%) but will take MO.
