Two older LB-7

These pic's come with a bit of a story... The LB-7 was my first "good knife" when I was a kid (14-15??). Unfortunately, when I was about 20 years old, I was home on leave and went for a winter hike in the mountains with a friend on a photography outing, and I left my first LB-7 on top of the mountain (in the sheath).

I had the knife and sheath in a plastic container along with a few snacks and when we got to the top of the mountain we took a break to eat before getting out the cameras. Long story short, I left the container there on an old stump and forgot to pick it up after taking pictures. I didn't realize I'd left it there until a few weeks later when I was back at the base.

At the time I'd purchased the knife, Schrade offered free replacement for a broken, or even a LOST knife. Figuring that I'd never see my original LB-7 again, I sent in and received the replacement.

About 8 years later (IIRC), I hiked back to the same spot and couldn't find the knife... no surprise. A few more years pass and I happen to run into the same friend who'd been with me when I lost it, and low and behold, he tells me he has something for me... My original LB-7! He had hiked back up to the same spot about 5 years after I'd lost it and HE'd found it inside what remained of the stump (no wonder it wasn't there when I looked for it).

Since I'd had it back in my possession, I again lost (misplaced) the original. During one of my military moves, I'd packed it away and sent it home to my folks house and didn't realize it was there. Mom found it while going through some stuff in the attic and gave it back to me a couple of days ago. What a wonderful Christmas surprise! Lost it twice and found it twice, I WON'T lose it again (I guess I must be destined to have it;)).

So there's the story behind the two LB-7's shown in the pictures.

My question; Approximately when would these knives have been made? I've been trying to remember how old I was when I bought the original, but just can't set the date.

The bottom knife in the picture (the dull greener looking one) is the original that was twice lost, and the top one closest to the square is the replacement. Other than the green stuff from years of being in the sheath, the ol' lost boy looks fine... I have some polishing to do though!

Date of manufacture? Value?

Thanks all, and have a VERY Merry Christmas (my old, original LB-7 is one of the best presents I've ever gotten... again... and again:D)!

ON EDIT: After reading a few threads, I now see that each of these knives has a number on the R-F bolster.... never realized. The numbers are U63434 and R26978.

Mid '80s, but likely someone here can give you a more specific age. The early LB7s had 4 pins visible in the handles.

love that particular knife the most. it is my EDC for sure. have had several over the years, lost, replaced lost again told by Schrade no more replacements which i thought was not unreasonable, but kept replacing them any way. glad you got your original one back. i lost my first one on a camping trip also. lent it to a friend to use and he left it on the fender of the car. no telling where it fell off on the way home.

Hmm... I thought that the 3 pin were the older ones?

At any rate, this is driving me buggy... I would almost guarantee that I bought the original sometime in my mid to late teens, putting it at a purchase date of between about 1970-73ish to around 1976-7ish... but then my memory isn't what it used to be. I am pretty confident though, that I probably didn't buy it before it was made.;)

Anyway, I'm exceedingly happy to have the old, original back in my possession. I'll post a pic of it after some oil and spit/polish cleaning.

It's just a GREAT knive!!!;):D

Tim, if you search through the LB7 thread in this great Schrade forum you will find posts on the approximate year of switch to 3 pin. Plus others have posted their serial #s, so you may be able to get an idea of when in the 1980s yours was made.
Codger knows best but only has infrequent computer access, but i bet he'll be along and give you the best currently known answer.

Not all of the 4 pins are older than all of the three pins, if you go according to the serial number. I agree the Codger has more insight on the topic than anyone.

Right, some of the SFOs continued to use 4 pins, but none of the early LB7s had just 3 pins.

Did the LB 7s and LB 8s have separate serial number sequences or were they intermingled?

Thank you gents... I'll keep searching for info, and perhaps Codger will have an opportunity to check also.
