Hi everyone. I just purchased a HOGFSH. Two questions:

1) Not that I want to, but can the handles be changed on these beauties? Does anyone sell kits to do this?

and,

2) Could anyone recommend a sheath for this knife? I am going to carry it, and use it!!! So I need something secure and comfortable. I have heard a ton of good things about the David Brown sheaths with the Tek Lok. Would I need a specific model or size different that that of a normal FSH due to the HOG thickness?

Thanks for your help!!!

Congrats on your score thats an awesome knife. If your going to carry it alot in different kinds of weather rain, snow and the likes. I'd go with kydex its lighter and pretty much bullet proof when it comes to weather. How thick is your Hfsh, you may have to send it to a sheath maker also to be fitted.

Kydex would be the one Imho then. There are several good kydex benders around here. If they don't have a .320 HFSH on hand to make a sheath from you'll have to send your knife to them to have it fitted. David Brown, Mashed Cat, and Okuden are some I've seen around here that do kydex sheaths.

I have chuddy bear sheath for my HOGFSH. The quality is amazing.

BTW this is exactly the same HOGFSH as you just bought. Congrats.

I have Okuden myself, but i really don't have any experience with the others. Maybe some of the other members will pop on here and give you some more ideas. The thing with kydex is if you want or have to go swimming with your knife. There's no worry about getting it wet or soaked. That's just my 2cents anyway.

to my knowledge no one makes a kit for changing out busse scales on any model. It's not hard if you have the equipment to do it (drill press, sander, dremmel, possibly a mill, and flaring tools if you want flared tube fasteners). The other option is to send it in to the custom shop to have the scales changed out. because it's the generic fusion handle shape, they should be able to provide you with your choice of scales, including standard machined, magnum, canvas, linen, paper or g10, tequila sunrise or whatever you want. Availability of material varies, and cost is determined by the shop. Call or send garth an email to see if they can do what you want and are willing to, then send it in as per their instructions

from what I've heard, okuden provides the best smooth retention. it's tight, but you don't need to wrench it out of the sheath.

BuyBrowns sheaths are a bit of a ymmv: they are excellent quality all around, but the retention is the "tight click" kind. you'll have to use your thumb to pull it out (lest you pull your pants to your armpits), and you'll have to push down pretty hard to get it to seat. This can be a slight problem because it wears heavily on either the talonhole and/or the scales. If your knife is a beater that obviously wouldn't be a problem. The tight click retention is a good thing if you want to make absolutely sure that it won't come out of it's sheath while running or being jostled.

I haven't tried steelnuts, but have heard good things.

Garth at Busse can change the handles for a reasonable amount. I prefer leather to kydex but IMO Okuden makes the best big knife kydex.

All of our kydex benders make a nice sheath, so no concerens there. The only potential difference is the carry system. Dave Brown does not have any version with a drop loop, whereas steelnut, Mashed Cat, and Okuden can offer that option.

If you are left-handed and interested in leather, drop me a line. I have something interesting for this model.

Um, let's take all deals offline or to the exchange. Please both of you edit your posts accordingly...

Thank you
The Management
