Two Questions about Polishing Compound

1. What does using polishing compound on a leather strop do to increase the sharpening process vs. just using the strop by itself?


2. Any recommendations for around-the-house materials I can use on my leather strop (which is an old leather belt) as opposed to buying polishing compound? I know, I'm pretty cheap
