can anyone tell me some specifics on the INFI steel?
and does anyone have a pic of the leather sheath that comes with it?
Thanks,
MO.

Hey, Maurice.

INFI is, in my opinion, the best tough-use steel in the world. It is AMAZINGLY tough, which has been proven countless times in tests, and still holds a GREAT edge (tests also prove this a lot). While not being a stainless steel, it does resist rust very well. Cliff Stamp's website has some tests on the rust resistance of INFI. It is probably equivalent to D2 in rust resistance, and D2 is considered a semi-stainless. Plus, when it does rust, the rust doesn't seem to hurt the cutting edge as much as it does on stainless VG-10 steel (used by fallkniven, spyderco, and others). Cliff Stamp says this in his test on the subject. I'll give a link to his website later.
Well, the Busse Basic models come with Modified INFI, not INFI. Modified INFI, while still a great steel, is quite inferior to INFI. It is supposed to be tougher, but some tests don't exactly suggest that. Try Cliff Stamp's website. It contains detailed comparisons of INFI vs M-INFI, as well as Basic Models vs. Combat Models, which come with regular INFI steel. They are very complete and detailed; great reviewing and testing. Here are the links:

Moving on to the sheathes...I don't know where you plan on buying this knife from, but the leather sheathes are discontinued now. Kydex is now standard; a pretty good improvement. The best price I've found is at www.Discountknives.com ...I think they come with Kydex there. There are also a lot of other online knife stores that have good prices and come with kydex sheathes. I don't know of a place where leather sheathes are pictured; sorry.

Anyway, hope that helped.

BTW, the Basic #5 is my favorite Basic. It has a pretty sharp point, lending itself to tactical uses and self defense, plus it is a pretty compact little package with plenty of toughness. A great knife IMHO.

In regards to corrosion resistance, both INFI and M-INFI resist pitting quite well. They will take surface rust faster than the stainless steels, and probably D2, however if you put all of them in a heavily corrosive enviroment for an extended period of time, D2, ATS-34 etc., will show heavy pitting, M-INFI and INFI are easily cleaned with a cloth.

Note both of the blades I have done the soaks on had no coating at all, nor was any kind of protectant used. On the Battle Mistress all that remained after cleaning were some very small spots of black oxide, they don't even show up on a picture. Most recent shot of the BM :

(note the nails were only cut about half-way through, they broke as I straightened them. The blade has some light edge damage but it is too small to see on the picture)

and the Basic :

I gave the latter to my brother some time ago and asked him how often he oiled it as it showed no evidence of rust. He looked kind of puzzeled and said "None, I thought it was stainless?!". As a comparison he was quite disgusted with the Trailmaster from Cold Steel as it rusted while walking home in the rain. Solution, he soaked the sheath in oil, was quite a mess, but did a decent job at protecting the blade.
