First,
I'm moving back to Massachsetts soon... I know it's legal to own balis there, I've seen em in stores... where's a good place to find info on whether or not they're carry-legal there?

Second, I'm thumbing through the archives, I still can't find the entry... someone in here mentioned finding a 42 for $102 at an outdoor-type website, I just don't remember which one... does anyone remember?

Back in 1983, I picked up a small (5.25 OAL, 2.25" blade) Balisong that was was made by Ken Largin of Kelgin Knives. Does anybody else have one of these little custom gems?

Yep, I can usually get the 42 for about $100.00+5% Md Sales Tax+Shipping.

I emailed American Outdoor Sports to ask for their BM bali price list. In less than 20hours (a record for large-scale online commerce it seems) I got this reply
"We carry the following :
42 $102.00
42S $102.00
42A $108.00
42AS $108.00
Sorry we do not have the Harley Versions. Thank you ."

Hope this helps.

Nate

If you've every noticed, ordering knives from a catalogue or on-line, it always says, "Cannot ship to NY, CA, and MA". Hope your collecting doesn't suffer because of it.

And what kills me is, you see people saying things like, "BaliSongs are legal in two States," or, "They're illegal everywhere."

Whatever. The implication being that they are a Switchblade...

Most people (read: sheeple) I know whould never say "Balisongs are illegal" or "Balisongs are only legal in 2 states". This is because the only people I know that know what the hell a balisong is, know the truth. However there are many people who think they know about butterfly knives though.
heh idiots.

Nate

PS I'll write back to AOS and ask if they ship to NY. Some places will ship to NY but not MA or CA

You can always ask the local Police Department about the legality of balisongs in the area *before* you buy them.Never ever bring one to the station house. If you have some, leave them at home.
Even if they cannot be "shipped" into your state, they might still be able to be sold there. The laws concerning shipping are more geared towards "deadly weaponry" than to "switchblades".
Check gun & knife shows, flea markets and martial arts shops. Some cutlery shops also sell them.If they cannot be sold in state, you can always take a trip in your car to another state and purchase them, bringing them back in your vehicle..as long as they are in the trunk.

I know they can't be shipped, but they're sold in state, at (of course) MSRP. I was just wondering if anyone knew a good site to look up carry laws. I would ask some of the LEO's, but half the time, they're just like the sheeple nate mentioned, and will just assume they're illegal. When in doubt, no, it's not allowed. So, in a lot of cases, knowing the law is better. Ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it, but nor should it be an excuse to get yourself unnecessarily arrested or hassled.

Not that I would advocate mouthing off to a LEO, on the contrary, I'm always as cooperative as I can be. They have a dangerous job that gets little respect or adulation, and often gets slammed by liberal media when something goes wrong or a citizen gets shot. If a cop gets shot, by contrast, it's just another day. So I'm as nice as I can be. But it's still nice at the same time to know what's law, and what's a LEO assumption.

I know a few people in MA that can either quote the law verbatim or will carry a copy of the law with them. Some of em work in knife shops, so it's helpful for them to know, too. Maybe carrying a copy is a bit extreme, but it takes up about as much space in your wallet as most of the receipts, ATM stubs, etc...

I agree, knowing the laws are important. The problem is,not all of us can read "legaleze" and be able to understand it properly. That's why I advocate asking the local LEO's.Sometimes it will take repeated tries to get the info from them.
I haven't run across an actual site that specifically mentions the laws for carrying knives, but sometimes the knife law will read "possession" as "carrying" while others read it as "owning".
You can also attempt to ask the State Police what the laws are, although they may give you the same runaround.Best bet is to just keep trying,or start looking in a different direction, such as a lawyer (they have access to the information),or possibly a law student/professor..they too could get the info for you.I know there's probably other methods for finding the info, but I can't think of any at the moment (I'm currently running on a 2 hour nap in the last 48 hours...which for me is *not* enough rest).
