Do any of you Benchmade insiders know if they are going to offer the 43/47 with a comboedge eventually? Also, for you guys who got the black coated handle option on your BM’s when it first became available and have done a lot of flipping, how is the coating holding up so far?

How is the coating holding up so far?

I have swung one of my new BMs (with the black handles) quite a bit, and I'd have to say I'm a little disappointed in the coating. I think it is a nice variation in appearance, but mine does have considerable coating damage around the latch (somewhat expected), and is starting to show wear some on the middle 1/3 of the handles where the varying finger/grip positions are most constant (far less expected).

In fairness..., of the two models I have with black coating, I have only used this particular knife extensively (approximately 10-12 hours of manipulation) <~~ give or take a little? This could be a simply -this particular knife- I suppose, but maybe some others can help with their experiences.

While on this topic..., has anyone heard or read anywhere exactly what the coating is?? Travis was going to email me with the specs, but I think he forgot. :(

Ive got a 43blk and the latch area has some finish chipping off:(
Other than that it is holding up pretty well, I wouldnt get another black one though.

Same, chipping on the latch, and the bite handle has the coating on the corner chipped from a kiss with the concrete.:(

So far my tachyon is holding up great though.
JUST KIDDING!!!

Yeah mine's doing well too Hogman!!! I've done thousands of manipulations....no cuts....no scratches..., everything still perfect!!!

Ohhhhhh....the pain of waiting huh?

No, they aren't offered with a comboedge, and personally, who the hell would put a comboedge on a bowie or a tanto?? They put one on the 44 but that was ugly too. I personally don't think they should put comboedges on balisongs, takes away from the look of the blade, unless of course it is a fully serrated kris blade!!!!!!

One of my EDCs is a Spyderco Lum Tanto Ti (plain edge of course). I do not have a problem with serrations, just serrations on certain blade styles.
Anybody notice that there has never been a custom Bali-Song with serrations? How about a custom balisong with serrations??

Serrations on a Utility blade (not reverse utility, that is custom) and weehawk are the only ones that could look good (besides the fully serrated kris blade :D). Actually, a fully serrated Mariner wouldn't look bad, though plain edge looks better.

But remember, that is just MHO, if you love the looks of serrations on tantos (never been any serrations on a bowie but we can imagine) then more power to you. Thank goodness we are not all alike (of course we wouldn't know it because we would all have the same paradigms about life). :)

Wow, I didn’t realize that a comboedge was the redheaded stepchild blade design for some of you guys. I think the serrations look cool from a general badassness perspective, but more importantly I like the versatility that that type of blade offers. I carry my balis to use almost as much as for the manipulation aspect, and I have found that the comboedge tends to be a better day to day blade. Anyway BalisongMan, you are absolutely right, if we all liked the same thing there would only be one bali design ever made!

let's not cut on redheaded stepchildren...:p

I like the combo-edge on my 42 for EDC, but the only other bali I have that has one is my Jaguar 259-copy.

Combo-edges are more made for a user bali, whereas the plain blades are more beautiful...IMHO...:)

A fully serrated kris, you mean every cutting edge would have serrations. What size/pattern of serrations would you use, and how would you flip it?

How would you flip it...?

Very carefully...

Probably the best hope for a fully serrated bali will come from Spyderco.

It might be a while until they get up the nerve to go for a serrated kris...:)

I agree, from the utilitarian point of view serrations are great, but sharpening them is extremely hard from what I have heard. But I do not use my balisongs for cutting anything (well, once in a while I'll use 'em) I have my Spyderco Lum tanto Ti plain edge or my LCC DA on my right side, and a BM 942 first production plain edge on my left hand (had to switch the clip for LH).

Hmmm, what pattern? How about all small teeth, all the same size, no real pattern, they would go around every sharp edge. Manipulating it would be the same as if manipulation a normal double edged balisong, except if you screw up it is a lot worse  I sincerely doubt that one will ever be made, but that would be really sweet to see. ;)

Edit: Let me make something a little more clear: I do not like combo edges, but I do like fully serrated blades, if a 47 or a 43 (or any balisong) came out with a fully serrated blade I would get it. For beautiful looks or pretty lines plain edge is best, but for interesting looks and "Wow! That is the strangest blade I have ever seen!!" fully serrated is the way to go. :D
