(1) i'm nuts about the Cold Steel Recon Scout in San Mai III, but can't get past the country of origin. is there a North American made equivelant? 7 1/2" non coated, satin finish (doesn't have to be laminate) blade, kraton handle, stainless guard?

(2) in the market for what i call a "Mega-Folder". been eyeing the Cold Steel Rajah II. country of origin doesn't bother me because it's not a bowie, it's only bowies that i have to stay local with. however, i've heard the Rajah II is a little slow on the draw. i don't see how this is possible because the clip seems located far enough down the handle to accomodate a decent grip (upon drawing) and it has the wave feature. maybe it's due to the angle change along the spine, i don't know. i've also looked at the 6" Ti-lite, but wasn't crazy about the clip being all the way at the back of the handle nor the single purpose style blade. suggestions for a mega folder? anybody have experience with the Rajah II? is it quick to deploy?

thanks guys

If you're dead set on a Kraton handle with steel guard, I can't think of anything.

If you're willing to replace the cheap rubber handle with a stacked leather one, there are a few Fallkniven knives in their 'northern lights' series that are very near to the Recon Scout in design and materials (they are all full-convex, laminated VG10).

If you're willing to lose the steel guard, some of the larger Fallknivens (the A1 and A2 I think) would fit the bill.

Fallkniven is a Swedish company, I think he is looking for something made in the USA or at least canada.

oops! i meant U.S. made. i was trying to avoid saying "American" because some of my South American friends always correct me on that. uh... yea, no Canadian either, my mistake. it's GOT TO BE made in the United States of America (yankee states are ok hehe) and it has to have a Kraton handle. i love me some kraton :D

Trying to help you out, are you dead set on that kraton, or will another tough synthetic work?

Oh. I see how it is. You're pretty much going to have to settle for something here - something's gotta give, because I don't think anyone makes something that exactly matches your parameters anymore (maybe a custom maker can help you out?). Like I said, fallkniven makes some stuff that almost exactly matches what you're looking for, except for country of origin. Some of the Bussekin are close, at least in terms of size and blade shape. Maybe someone else can suggest something...

The only other option that leaps to mind is to find one of the old Carbon-V cold steel knives that, as far as I know, had their blades manufactured by Camillus in the U.S. Then you'll have to remove the coating yourself, and maybe have a stainless guard made for it (I think the old ones had powder coated brass guards).

What have you got against us Canadians, anyway? Tryin' to start something, ya hoser? :p

Seen the SOG Pentagon Elite II? 5 in. blade. You can find them on the bay at right around $105.00.

I think you're gonna have to go Custom - not a bad way to go though on the spendy side... I struggled through the same decision - though w/the Trailmaster.

I luv me some Kraton too and don't understand why all the hate for it...

I eventually compromised on the country-of-origin and got the Trailmaster - though if i had the xtra jack sitting around i'd have been e-mailing one of the fine Custom Guys here (i dig Paul Moore's G-Zilla bigtime!!!!).

i've got nothing against Canada. i've driven all the way through it, several times, and it seems like a great place :) it's just that the Bowie is such an iconic piece of U.S. history, it seems almost blasphemous to have one made elsewhere. truth is - i think it's going to be 'country of origin' that i end up compromising on. i've bought several knives, trying to satisfy the Recon Scout craving and it's just getting stronger (now that i've blown a few bills on other things). i believe the SM3 model is Japanese not Chinese which is kind of cool because my old Recon Tanto (kind of Japanese styled) is actually U.S. made. so... it balances out, i guess.

negative on the other synthetics, unless they feel like checkered kraton, i love that stuff.

what about my other question? you guys have any experience with the Rajah II? oh, and i'll check out the SOG, i'd sure like to have that extra inch of blade, though. i'm a fixed blade guy. so, any folder i carry has to be kinda large and strong. in fact, the only reason i'm lookin for a folder is one of my jobs frowns on my fixed blade :(

thanks again to all y'all helping me figure this out. i didn't think there was a U.S. equivalant of the RS, but figured it's better to ask and be sure.
