Okay, I have two spaces that need to be filled with a knife: The first is my brother, he's in Cub Scouts and needs a knife. I know I'll get a lot of people screaming for Vics of various types, but I was wondering if you have any other ideas. He is 9.

The second is for me-I'm going to be going to some heavily sheeple-infested areas (college) and need a knife to fit these specs:

-NO assisted opening of any kind.
-Maximum 3 inch blade.
-$50-60~, although if its a bit more still bring it up.
-One handed opening if at all possible.
-Must have a lock.

Thanks in advance everyone!

First for your brother, a LEATHERMAN TOOL!

Two for you, a Gerber Para Frame! $20.00 meets your specs and titanium coated for no rusting.

Good Luck on campus!

Seems to me that a Scout needs a Scout knife. You know the kind, a regular blade, an awl, a can opener, and a screwdriver/bottle opener that used to be useful for every bottle of pop in the world but now is only needed for the occasional imported bottle of beer without a twist off top. Plenty of official Scout models available but for a nine year old one of those under ten bucks stainless steel jobs that says "US" on the side. When he's an Explorer, get him one out of the A.G. Russell catalog.

For you in school, pick your chosen quality folder with a clip to keep discretely tucked away for times of serious need but keep a SAK in your pocket for everyday use around people. Spydercos seem to cause the least commotion amongst quality folders.

for your bro i'd say leatherman too. GREAT tool. if you want just a knife maybe a byrd robin or meadowlark.

for you, definitely a spyderco delica.

Having been a Den Leader for five years, A Cubmaster for three of those years, and now an Assistant Scoutmaster for two years I'll tell you there are two things you should consider:

1. The knife will most likely be lost within one or two years - this is for any Scout. I highly recommend you provide an arm-length lanyard out of paracord - preferably the bright orange stuff - that goes from the knife to the Scout's belt or belt loop (not his neck!!).

2. For Cub Scout, there is a chance that he may not be able to open most folders one-handed. This is mostly a strength issue, but for some is also a dextarity issue. He'll grow out of this by the time he hits Boy Scouts (11 years old).

My advice is to get him a Kabar Dozier Folding Spear. It runs $20 on-line, is lightweight, 3' locking blade, AUS 8A steel, clip (reversable for lefties), and has a lanyard hole that will take paracord.

I gave one of these to my son and he loved it. He then lost it on the 3rd day of his first summer camp - fell out of his pocket. Two days later I saw someone using the same kind of knife and asked to see it, found my son's name scratched on the handle, reminded the Scout he should have turned it in to lost and found (A Scout is Trustworthy), and reclaimed it. I returned it to my son with an orange paracord lanyard under the understanding that the lanyard will be attached to his belt/belt loops. He's had it for another 1.5 now.

Don't give it to him until he's earned his Whittlin' Chip card, AND remind him NEVER to take it to school.

Fantastic knife for the price!!!!!!!!!!!!

His big bro just had his Eagle court last week, so he's aware of the safety issues. That lanyard is a really good idea; I've been meaning to pick up some cord anyway.
Madfast-The Delica is on my list, along with a couple other Spydercos. Now that blade length is an issue, its surprising how appealing they've become.

For your brother- a good buck lockback
For you-
Spyderco dragonfly- good size 2.3in.. Not to tactical looking, and about 40-45$
or
spyderco copilot- 2in blade, about 50-60$
or
AG Russell 2.5in titanium lockback- TI handled, VG-10, $24.95, a sweet deal, good materials low price!
