Hey Roger, what's the story with the two rivets at the bottom of your 118 sheath? Factory installed or someone's personal modification?

TAH TAH The rivets are factory, I have seen multiple examples over the years. I do not have a better answer for you at the moment. Perhaps this evening I will poke around my collection and give it more thought. If anyone else has something to add, please do. Perhaps if anyone has one it would be helpful if they posted the age and model of the knife it contained and we could build up a database.

jmh33 jmh33 ...yes it is!

DeSotoSky DeSotoSky I asked because I found a few examples on the internet, but not much has been said on the forum about the rivets or their timeline. Just wondering. I like the look!

These are a little more spaced out. Maybe not factory?

Per Larry Oden's Book (page 120) the rivets appeared on the Atchison-made sheaths made between 1967 and 1968. There is no definite records why these rivets are there but it was discussed amongst serious collectors and they determined that they where installed as a repair under warranty at the factory.

Thanks Mike! Very interesting and I'm not doubting you, but if the rivets were installed as a repair, this sheath looks new/unused and even the stitching around the rivets appears to be intact.

DeSotoSky DeSotoSky Roger, your sheath looks to be in good shape too. Does it appear the rivets were added for some reason?

I have seen those at shows and examined them. They did not look to be repair work. More like reinforcing wear or stress areas. Something tried and then dropped.
It made me scratch my head. DM

Not specific to Buck sheaths, but many sheaths from other makers have a rivet or two at the tip, and sometimes one at the tang. those are common stress points, and there's always the possibility of just slicing your sheath open. You'll also see a narrow folded sheet metal piece along the tip and lower edge of some sheaths.

Yes, I was just wondering if the rivets were only installed for repair reasons (per post #6) or if the rivets were installed on new Buck sheaths for a short period.
