Take a look at these two BirGorkha sarkis and tell me they have not had a couple of shots of khukuri rum!

The one on the left is Raju whom I've met. I think the other guy is a cousin who is helping with katata scabbards.

Uncle,
They both look a little more than drunk. They look like they have been smokeing the wacky weed to me. This pic explains some of the sheath problems.

I am betting on the rum. Since the wacky weed grows wild in Nepal and is free few local folks care to smoke it. If it is free what good is it?

As subcontractors we have little authority over how the sarkis live their lives or how they do their work. We can accept or reject but they damned well are going to have to improve or we will send Terry, Brian and Dan over!!!! 40 cents per hour and all the rice you can eat plus you can sleep in the shop right next to a warm forge (in July no less -- 95 degrees and 99 percent humidity!)and go out everyday and pick all the wacky weed you want to smoke. What a deal!!!

They look a little more than three sheets to the wind! More like the whole clothes hamper to the wind!

The joys of being self employed and working for BirGorkha. These guys are making more money than they've ever made in their lives. Now if they would only start doing a decent job we would all be happy.

Please excuse my cultural ignorance, but are chairs and workbenches scarce in Nepal? Most of the pictures I recall, whether of kamis or sarkis, show them doing thier work (heating, forging, quenching!) sitting on the floor or squatting.

My back hurts and my legs fall asleep just thinking about it. Maybe the rum helps.

They don't use chairs and benches in Nepal for the most part. I considered putting some in the shop when I was there and was told they were not needed and would just get in the way.

Khukuri FAQ

People who aren't used to it think sitting in a chair is extremely uncomfortable, believe it or not.

The world is rapidly becoming homogenized, but I am told it's not so long ago that if you gave a chair to people in many parts of the world they literally would not have known what it was for. They'd probably have put a flowerpot on it.

Cougar, you are dead right.

Yangdu has been living in the US for 15 or 16 years now and she still will sit on the floor and eat sometimes because she thinks it is comfortable and it reminds her of home.

My wife eats sitting on the floor regularly, and she's a nice "Sicilian" girl from New York.

I sit on the deck a lot. If you add Nhoc Mam and all the ammo I can shoot, you can keep the .40 cents.
With a gun; you can get anything else that you may want. There are few problems that can`t be solved by the judicious use of a 30-06, or a .45.
This rather reminds me of CMDR. Rick Marcinko,USN showing up for briefings looking just like that. And he wonders why they put him in jail after his sea daddy was promoted beyond helping him.
