I'm newly converted to the addiction here - bought a CQC-7 (which was quickly followed by a 13 and mini-15). VERY impressed with Emerson knives. Makes the crap I was using look bad indeed.

I have long thought about creating a knife collection (slowly hopefully). I read about the Emerson Collector's Association on their web site, and I wasn't sold that it was worth it. I didn't like the 2009 Knife of the Year (I like the two-tone handles better).

Some feedback on the value of joining this is welcome. Is the ECA worth it?

Also, are the gray, two-toned handles (like shown in the upcoming auction) custom knives only? How do you acquire these, only though auctions like the one on Monday?

what you are referring to are the bolstered knives. they are only available as customs.

As beautiful as the bolstered knives are, give me a production any day.

Why do you prefer the production versions - is it the price difference? Do the titanium bolsters and micarta handles add anything in performance, or is it aesthetics? Having never handled a custom, its hard for me to tell.

It seems that the custom versions certainly command a premium price, and it sounds like hold their value - and look fantastic.

What about the Emerson Collector's Association - is it worth the $45 to join?

Are the ECA knives worth it? Short answer "yes". Remember, the ECA knives are limited production knives, not regular production knives. The first two sets in the series were hand ground.

However, nothing beats a custom. It is just a whole other level.

Knapp--- I just like G-10. I love how it feels in my hand. I sold my HD-7 because I like the G-10 on both handle slabs.

i always have liked the bolstered emerson customs, i like the looks, its a custom only thing but some mod'ers can put bolsters on a production, it isnt cheap to do though, IIRC i was quoted ~$250 to do it on a '8, IIRC anyway, i am sure like i said it isnt cheap to do it, by the time ya add the bolsters and buy the knife ya might as well choke up a bit more and get a custom, that was the conclusion i came to.

imho the ECA's are pretty cool, and if ya can find one at a decent price i would jump on it, i got a ECA P-tac back in '03 or so for $150 or so & have never regretted the purchase.
