tying a lanyard?

I just picked up some 550 cord but realized that I don't know how to tie a lanyard. I tied a square not for now but it looks pretty hokey.

Can anyone describe how to properly tie off the end of a lanyard?

Looks like a hangmans knot. If you don't need to adjust the length of the loop, try using a bowline.

for just a simple tie-off, i use a figure eight knot. it's secure, not to bulky and looks cool to boot!

A simple overhand knot using both sides of the lanyard (doubled) is what I've used. One such knot has stayed tied in 550 cord for thirty-odd years. Seems pretty secure. Probably fancier and even "more secure" knots out there, like the figure 8.
