New to BladeForums. I purchased a couple of Randall's in the pat six months and have a few question about them. I hope forum members might be able to shed some light on them.
My Model 10 appears to be older. The Roughback sheath is some indication of this, correct? Is the lack of a lanyard hole a clue to age or just an optional item? No logo on the button (snap).
I just received the Model 8 last week. Old style "Trout and Bird" with reduce hilt. I've been walking around with a grin all week. I was surprised at how different the manufacturing style of this knife's Type B sheath is from the Model 10. Additionally I have been unable to find any reference as to what the letter "W" stamped below the Randall logo signifies. Randall logo on the button (snap). Any help would be welcomed.

Maurice, and later Johnny Johnson made the rough back sheaths from 1961 to 1991 with the smooth backs starting in late 1989. I imagine your Model 10 was simply ordered without a lanyard, but that's just a guess. The "W" indicates a waxed sheath. The Randall logo buttons on the Sullivan sheath started in 1995.

Chuck...

Look's like you got yourself some ' keeper's ' there. I can answer your question on yor RMK old style Model 8-4" sheath...the 8-4 X means it's for the old style blade..the W means you've got a 'Waxed' sheath.

That, and the lanyard hole was introduced as standard fare on Model #10's in the early to mid 80's timeframe - before that, no lanyard holes on Model #10's...
