types of damascus?

i'm wondering is there any book or reference out there that puts the name on the kind of damascus based on the patterning?
i'm utterly lost :)
i'm thinking, there're so many different possible variations out there that each individual can come up with whatever name they want for it, no?
 
I don't know of any book that would catagorize all the different damascus patterns. I don't even know if anyone would want to try to come up with such a difinitive work.

Their are quite a few patterns that are easy to recognize, such as ladder, twist, random and mosaic. Many others are not recognized patterns, they are just something that ended up happening.
 
Dear DEA,
At this time I am in the process of compiling what I hope to be the definitive text on damscus patterns. This text will include a step by step logical easy to read and understand, theory of pattern identification and construction. And now get this, it will be on CD rom format, loaded with visuals and voice overs animation etc. a must have for all such as yourself, curious about this facinating art/craft. Watch for it!
