Would someone be kind enough to explain the difference between these types of steel.....8620,4140,6150,and 5160. I've seen hawk heads listed with these numbers but I don't know how one differs from another. Any good reference guides? Thanks in advance............Alan

I will also join in in asking about these steels. I have been meaning to ask for quite a while but i'm afraid of sounding like a 'know-none' if you get me meaning...

Also can someone shed some light on the heat treating or other process that makers use to improve the steels/blades? For example how do you differentially heat treat just the sharp end of an axe (leaving a hamon (me thinks that what it's called) line). I know samurai blades are coated with clay and quenched but axes are much different in shape...

If anyone is still interested in this thread post something and I will try to provide a practical insight. We make axes and knives and are familiar with several steels that are both popular and practical for this purpose. Jack Harrill

Moosetrax, good to see you posting here.

You make a throwing axe and a trail hawk.
What steels do you use and why?

I have re-finished one of your trail hawks. Here's the thread.

Do you know what the steel might be? My memory isn't as sharp as it was.

I've posted pics of that 'hawk on several forums...it always gets compliments.:)
