Amidst our americocentric knife babbling we often forget what's affecting those outside the US. I would like wish Godspeed and safe passage to our Australian friends in the path of tropical cyclone Larry.
This typhoon has already reached Category 5 status and is expected to land near Innisfail with wind gusts estimated at 280 km/hr. Larry is being compared to Katrina. Facing the most powerful typhoon to hit Queensland in decades, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has already declared the region a natural disaster zone. Destructive winds are already being experienced between Ingham and Port Douglas. The Great Barrier Reef lies east of Cairns and both will feel the effects of Larry for some time to come but it's the back blocks along the coast that will bear much of the damage. Though winds will ease as Larry moves inland there will still be danger from heavy rains and winds as it moves into the Gulf of Carpenteria.
Looks like northern Queensland will be a dog's breakfast for a spell. Gather enough ANZAC biscuits t' last a spell. Hope she'll be apples for all of me cobbers Down Under.
Stay safe, mates.
