Hello. This is my first post here so I feel I should introduce myself.
My name is Steve Rice. I live in Bartlesville Oklahoma and I primarily make folders when I sit down to build a knife.
I have been having my pocket clips hardened but don't know the Rc of them. I'm trying to find that out because I suspect they are too hard.
The problem is I've had some snap/break instead of bend here lately and feel that bending would be preferred. I guess my real question is does the clip even need to be hardened? Can't a short clip make up a little of the strength and toughness being that a short piece of metal is harder to bend than a long one?
What do you other guys making folders and your own clips put the Rc of your pocket clips at and why?
I guess I am looking for a middle of the road area where they are tough but not brittle. I use almost always 410 stainless for my hand made clips, which as you know is tough to get past a 45 Rc hardness but apparently that is still hard enough to make it break instead of bend. I am not sure if titanium would be better?? Have been thinking of going to .o40 titanium though. But not sure of what that Rc should be anymore than I am with stainless. Any help or experiences you wish to share with me appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
