In the box with my Native 5 (excellent knife, BTW) was a description of the knife. It's the same as that on the web site. I read it, and noticed something I'd not when reading the web description.

The Native5 represents an evolution in American knifemaking with a bold G-10 handle and nitrogen-hardened CPM-S35VN blade.

Since the "N" in CPM-S35VN stands for "Niobium", whence comes the reference to Nitrogen?

Is that a typo, or am I missing something?

(Although I'd bet that the heat treat does include a dunk or so in LN2, that process isn't normally referenced that way. There are lots of alloys that benefit from that treatment and I don't see that descriptive applied to them.)

You may be, or I may be. There's no inference being made in the ad copy that the N in CPM-S35VN stands for nitrogen, at least none that I can see. To me, whether other steels are nitrogen hardened or not is immaterial. Assuming CPM-S35VN is, then it just becomes a case of whoever wrote the ad copy for this one choosing to mention it. On the other hand, how would niobium aid in hardening?

there's isn't any nitrogen in S35VN.

niobium is used to increase the toughness of the steel and add a little more wear resistance (over S30V).

Cryo for CPM-S35VN is designed around straight dry ice at -112°. You don't need liquid nitrogen for cryo, according to Crucible.

so if it does refer to part of the heat treat process, it adds to the description as much as 'tactical' would

S35VN doesn't need liquid nitrogen for cryo treatment but spyderco uses other steels that may require lower temps than dry ice too. if they have liquid nitrogen ... they use it and they tell us they used it.

that's it for me.
