Does anyone know approximatly what the U.S. Customs charges would be for a knife worth $550? I am thinking about buying a knife from Australia and was wondering what kind of experience any of you have had, thanks for any information. :D

this is a question for guy ot ian, the send knives back and forth. gundy sent one to me and there was no problem.

Hmm, why could one not just enclose a note saying:

"Thanks for letting me borrow your knife. It is a bit more/less than I require. Here it is all cleaned up the best I could."

or something like that??

Just a thought.

I talked to my brother, who is a Customs Officer and he said that the charge is 3% for anything over 800 dollars coming in as long as it is payed for in dollars. An example would be if...you got something coming in and you paid 1000 dollars for it you would only pay 3% for the 200 of the 1000 because its over the 800.The first 800 is duty free...Hope this helps...he also said that there is a chance that the package can be opened and the contents examined.

You devious son of a gun you:D ;)

I've received stuff from all over the place and never had
to pay customs charges. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Not to be an ass......but has the value of any thing at a time been valued at 800$ at a time ??....I am only relaying info directly from a US Customs Officer.

Disregard my last post....Too much Jagermiester....LOL....I don't even know what I was trying to say!!:D

randucci,

no problems at all, we simply put the word 'gift' on it either insured for the full amount or not, no matter, still gets through all okay.

I usually throw in a note along the lines of that stated above too.

I can not see how or why customs (anywhere) can charge you import tax on a trade type item...:D

I agree with everything Gundy has just said. Our only problem is import duty, receiving them, it has never been a problem from Busse Combat, as whoever ships from there always keeps the stated value under two hundred dollars.

Sometimes they are opened and looked at but mostly they are not.
Leaving our country is never a problem.:)
Ian.

I believe Gundy is. If I had a chance I would jump into his suitcase. Problem is being a bit of a hillbilly I might not want to leave again.:D :)
Ian.

Edited to add:
If I get out into that back country that Carl talks about it might take a bit to shift me.:)

Randucci,
I just had two knives posted back to me from Australia post, with a note saying that all weapons are banned from entering into the U.S.A.
I’m not sure if its just bureaucracy bungling at its best or if in fact there are new laws prohibiting knives or guns entering the U.S.
It might now pay to check up from your end.
What had I sent was a folder and a small fixed blade that were on route to David Brown in AZ.
Ian.

Yeah, but im on mobile 048680571. I went back to the post office to ask what the problem was and the guy said its in the new banned list?
He just gave me my money back for the postage.

The knives turned back up in my mail box this morning.
Ian
Edited to enter the correct number: 0418680571:D

Gundy, I guess we will find out if there is a problem!

Just mark contents as "Handtool".... They can´t argue that it is, and it doesn´t sound like a weapon!!;)
Been running "weapons" through customs here for 10 years now!!
ALIass

amen to that Alias, or 'Camp Tool'...

or 'Camp Tool - refurbish', or 'Sample'!

I am full of em! ... or it...:D
