I recently acquired some surplus pilot survival knives for cheap and I've considered building some knife based survival kits out of them to give away as gifts.

If you are familiar with this knife, you'll know that there is a pocket on the front of the sheath for a sharpening stone. I'm thinking of removing the stone and replacing it with a micro survival kit.

What would you place within the pocket?

Thanks for your replies

Definitely, a chocolate bar. (OK, some of us have a different idea of what's needed to survive. :) )

How about a fire kit? Firesteel & petroleum jelly-soaked cotton.
How about a med kit? Alcohol pads, Neosporin, bandaids.
Maybe a small flashlight.

I would get a little card sharpener and cut that to fit, then i would put in a small firesteel and some fatwood.

If i am remembering right, their is also a metal cover that goes over teh back of the sheath (?). it there is, maybe put some bandaids or waxpaper down in there.

BarberFobic, It's funny that you've mentioned about the space behind the metal piece.

I placed a piece of that cloth backed sandpaper down in there and I saw a video on youtube where the guy stuck duct tape on it.

He had a fishhook in there too.

Something extra might be taped below the sharpener pocket. Then covered with heavy aluminum foil, then paracord?

I would think fire would be No. 1 driver to select gear due to multiple uses of fire.

Vic Classic, great idea RescueRiley. Yes, for the detailed work.

I agree Thomas, Fire should be a priority.

After everything from a Buck 119, to a Gerber BMF to stag handled bushcrafters and everything else you can imagine, all I carry now is my Pilots Survival knife with a firesteel in the pouch. The striker fits on the back of the sheath between it and the metal cover, but I usually just use the backside of the blade tip.

I would put a small firekit in the pocket. I believe next to a knife, the fire is the most essential part of kit. At least in any area that I would be going. A small kit isn't a bad idea, but it would be much more effective it it was 100% on one thing, than 10% on 10 different areas.

Didn't someone put a USGI 1st aid/compass pouch with altoids tin inside on front of sheath??
It will hold more stuff than the stone pocket.

The U.S. Government issued Pilots Survival Knife (early 70's vintage) was the only knife that ever failed me when I needed it most - in a survival situation when in the military (I crashed my airplane!).

Could you explain a little more?? Behind enemy lines story??
BTW, is there a manual showing the uses of the USAFSK??

If you cover the sheath in rubber you have all sorts of room for survival goodies. Mac
