U.S Machete repair......

I picked up a well worn 23.25" US stamped machete, made by the Ontario Knife Co. for $5 at a gun show. It has a three-rivet grip and two holes at the butt, I'm guessing for lanyard/s. The blade is pitted, but serviceable, but my concern is the grips. The rivets are intact, but the bakelite scales are both broken off just behind the rearmost rivet. The tang is visible beneath the hollow scales, and it's rusted pretty good, but as I said, still serviceable. I'd be interested in opinions on how best to repair/restore this. I can whack the bakelite scales off, and make wood ones... or is there a source for replacement scales, and rivets?

Thanks

you can cut out some new grips from any hard wood. if you were up for a road trip to ohio you could come over and i would put some neoprene on for you and fine tune the blade too.

Ok, a couple of questions...

1. where in Ohio?
2. Is there any value to this machete as is, and would any value be increased if I were able to restore it to original?

I have made knive scales before, but I wouldn't want to bubba anything military issue. I'm not thinking it's rare or anything, but I do appreciate tools, and weapons being original. I also have very limited knowledge of edged weapons...
