Hello,

please take a look at the attached drawing below. It's approximately 1 inch wide round blade of 0.06 inch thickness . I would need to create it from damasteel. Can you advice me on how to go about creating this:

Firstly, I have an idea of shaping the blade before heat treatment and leaving 0.015 inch blade edge before final sharpening after heat treat, would this work well?
Another method would be to just cut the U shape and not shape the blade at all, then heat treat and grind the shape out only after heat treatment. But I wonder if 0.06 inches is too thick to grind to razor sharp edge of 15 degrees after heat treatment?

Any other suggestions on how to do it properly?

A little information on the blade you want to make and its use would help. HT and blade geometry are both a factor of use. Also, tell us why do you wish damasteel for the project.

Damasteel HT is pretty straight forward and there isn't a lot of wiggle room. It is basically the same as RWL34/ATS34/154CM. It requires a good HT oven and cryo tank.
I am not aware of it coming in thin sizes of .060" You would likely have to grind it down from .120". It is pretty expensive, and wasting half of it isn't desirable to most folks.

Here is the HT regime I have in my notes for a final RC 60 blade ( Do all sanding to 400 grit and leave an edge of .02"):

Foil wrap blade with high temp foil

Stress relieve at 1200 F for 2 hr. Oven cool to 800 F ( turn off oven heat and let drop slowly in closed oven). Remove and air cool to ambient

Preheat oven to 1400 °F

Place blade in preheated oven and soak for 10 minutes to equalize

Ramp at 9999 to 1950°F

Austenitize at 1950 °F for 15 to 20 min

Plate quench

Snap temper at 325 °F for 1 hour

Cryo in LN for 12 hours

Temper at 500 °F for 2 hours

Second temper at 450 °F for 2 hours

Stacy, thanks!

skillgannon, it's a hairdresser tool I was ordered to co-create it but don't know the best way to go about it. Not very masculine, I know.

I think I got the answers on this one. Thanks alot guys! Will do my best

You can get .093 damasteel from Jantz. My heat treat is very similar to Stacy's.
