I just ran across a Craigslist add for a bunch of Uddeholm saw blades from a saw mill and I was considering picking some up in hopes that it is 15N20. The blades vary from 7"-10" wide and she is selling them from $.60-$.85 per linear inch (so for $6, I can get 10" of the narrower blades). I was planning on using it for damascus and a few small kitchen blades if it is 15N20. What do you guy think- Should I pick some up?

I think you should go for it. How thick are they? I have the composition of the blades below. They have been used for Damascus before.

This is the nominal chemical composition of UDDEHOLM bandsaw blade steel:

Up to 1,2mm thickness is UHB-15
C: 0,71% Si: 0,30% Mn: 0,50% P max: 0,020% S max: 0,015%

over 1,2mm thick is UHB-15N20
C: 0,75% Si: 0,30% Mn: 0,40% P max: 0,020% S max: 0,010% Ni: 2,0%

Not sure of the thickness yet, I sent the seller an email and she said she wasn't sure and she'll get back to me tomorrow. My hopes are for 15N20, and that's what I'm expecting given the width of the blade, but in the event that it isn't 15N20 what would the alternative steel be closest to? It looks like 1070 with just a little less manganese and phosphorus. Either seem like decent blades steels and worth the listed price.

That seams kinda pricy depending on thickness. If you look at say the 7" wide, I'm guessing you will loose at least 1" of width when you cut off the teach. So 6" wide by say 12" by let's say .072 would weigh 1.46lbs and it's what .60 per inch so $7.20 for that. $7.20/1.46lbs = $4.93 per pound. I sell wide blades that have the teeth removed for just over $3 a pound. Thy are 11.5" wide by 23.75" long and .090 thick. I also sort out anything with cracks or welds and try and only sell good solid steel. This does create a good amount of scrap. In fact I also have narrower blades in the 6-7" range that are .072 thick that I sell for less the $3 a pound. Im not trying to steal business at all, in fact I have more then I can handle. I'm just saying for what your getting with the teeth still on it and the narow width I think it's high in price.

I should have calculated that out. Makes sense.

I would also check current prices at AKS for 15N20 and 8670, remembering that they are ready to use steel that will not require removing teeth or annealing/softening to where you can easily cut and drill them

I may have to get some from you then. As convenient as this is, I am not sure I like the idea of having to go through the trouble of dealing with craigslist sellers. Thanks for breaking down the prices and variables, that really put things into perspective.

Its great steel if you can get it for the right price. We have a junkyard we trade with for materials. We got 120 feet of 12" wide by .086 thick uddenholm 15n20 for a small knife..
I know that's not always possible but used blades can sometimes be found in scrap yards or in lumber yards themselves..A nice little knife will get you a lot in a place like that..
Might give it a try sometime is you have any places like that local..

These blades (mine) are only hardened to around 42-43rc and actually drill and cut easily. Maybe not as easily as something dead soft but thy are soft enough to file by hand.

I have have been wanting to try some of these saw blades but you are hard to get a hold of. If you want the business I kinda gotta throw some your way since I grew up in Stevens and Ferry county's.

Kentucky Kentucky That's my kind of deal ;) I once did a three person barter with Kerry Stagmer and another guy who was selling a really nice 120# Fisher anvil. Kerry helped me out with securing the anvil and received a little wharncliffe in return, and the other guy got a nice bird and trout. Money is great, but bartering is more fun!

Right after I set up my phone line for the shop I got a message from some wanting some but I fat fingered the new phones buttons and deleted it. I have been searching for this person ever sense.
