Hi,

Have anybody here tried any of the steels available from uddeholm?

I'm very intressted in trying them but haven't found much info about them.

There are two powder steels that sounds intressting, Elmax and vanadis 4

Have any tried either of these or can say someting about the steel composition?

Elmax
C - 1.7
Si - 0.8
Mn - 0.3
Cr - 18.0
Mo - 1.0
V - 3.0

Vanadis

C-1,4
Si-0,4
Mn-0,4
Cr-4,7
Mo-3,5
V-3,7

I'm also intresstedi uddeholm Sleipner:
C Si Mn Cr Mo V
0,9 0,9 0,5 7,8 2,5 0,5

Regards Jakob

Elmax and vanadis 4 would make good knives but they are not easy to find here in the USA.Larrin Thomas would probably have some experience with these.

vanadis looks alot like M4 except for the tungsten M4 is better and more easily available
M4
C-1.42
Mn-.3-.7
Cr-4
V-4
W5.5
Mo-5.25

Okay, thank you.

I ve done some more research and I'm afraid that they are only available in 5,2mm sheets thats too thick for me...

But what about böhler N690?

I had purchased some D2 from Flatground.com, and after a while they contacted (by phone, I like that) me to talk about what types of steel do I use for knifemaking. I told em I used CPM154 and planned on getting some S30V. She then got back to me and said they had Elmax which was closer to S30V, sent me a spec sheet by E mail. I had thought about it for a while and I am sure they have a decent product (who knows, maybe the QC sucks maybe it doesn't) but I want to do everything I can to use American steel. Now that I think about it that bar of D2 I bought was maybe not American. Damn...

The tempering graph is interesting. Cooked @ 1920 you get 60 as quenched, then going up in temperature during the temper, the hardness goes down to 55 by 600deg then back up to maybe 58 by 1000deg. 2010 starts off at 61 as quenched and goes down and up to 60 by 1000deg.

that is strange can you post a link or picture

oh and Nylunds where are you? the steels you have mentioned may indeed be more available than their American counterparts

Gixxer, that is from "secondary hardening" which you get in alloys with Mo, V, W.
Nylunds [you must be from Sweden !] N690Co is what I now have for my EDC and it's a great steel similar to our 154CM or ATS-34. Elmax and Vanadis 4 are a step above that being powder type with higher amounts of alloying elements like V so they are closer to S30V.

Mete, your almost right, I'm from Finland but my mother tongue is Swedish.

So I have acces to Uddeholms steels as well as böhler steels.

I don't mind using american steels but I do mind paying shipping, custom fees and taxes for american steels.

Also you can find some AEB-L, RWL34, UHB20C. Good steels you have there Jakob. Actually I import all my steels from Sweeden :)

Do you buy it directly from Sweden? If so do you have an email adress to Uddeholm?

I don't like aeb-l mainly because everybody here are using it and rwl-34 are to expensive and only available as bars and not sheets.

What do you think about UHB20C? It,s a plain carbonsteel right?

Lately I bought RWL34, UHB20C, UHB26C, 15N20 and AEB-L from Nordellknives.com. They are really great, perfect service, fast too...
UHB20 and 26C are plain carbon steels, UHB20C is very similar to 1095, UHB26C is a very high carbon brother of 20C :)...

Uhheholm ELMAX and Bohler N680, N690 and M390 are all avaiable in the US, stock is in Seattle, WA. Sizes are .125 and thicker.

ELMAX and M390 are powder stainless, high in both chrome and vandium.

N690 is a conventional steel with added alloys for better sharpness and edge retention.

N680 has nitrogen added for better salt water corrosions resistance in a steel that can be hardened and tempered to 58 Rc.

You can purchase these steels from Alpha Knife Supply now. :)

Used some M390 a few months ago, it's very, very nice stuff. Easy as all hell to grind (grinds like mild steel), mirror polishing is tougher than ATS-34 -but it does takes a nice finish -similar to CPM steels. Heat treat is pretty much idiot proof if you follow the directions.

Sleipner is a great great knife steel.
It's worth to try. I did a try from scrap of another knifemaker but
If I can find where to buy some Sleipner or better some Niolox i will be more than happy.

Expecially Niolox because is something better than D2 and has far better machinability.

Cheers
