Would anyone be so kind as to please post me a pic of an Udhaipur khukuri? (Not a Gelbu Special - I keep on getting pics of a Gelbu Special when I search for the Udhaipur.)

Thanks a lot in anticipation, guys!

Johan,

I have to apologize for perhaps leading you astray. The knife I called an Udhaipur in the FAQ was a village knife made close to that village.

The village Udhaipur pictured above is 16” long and 14 oz. The blade is about 5/16 thick at back and about 1.5 wide. This is my knife, and there may not be many, if any, other similar village models in circulation. You may be able to tell from the specs and picture above how it compares with other commercially available khukuris.

The Gelbu Special was modeled after this village knife, but is substantially thicker and heavier.

Then to sum it up succinctly, an udhaipur is a chainpuri with a regular handle? And a Gelbu Special is about the same thing only beefed up to ( close to ) Sirupati weight?

Close, Rusty.

The Udhaipur has a full length fuller that lightens it up a bit. I believe the Chainpuri lacks the fuller. From holding your Chainpuris I would say that the feel of the Udhaipur and the Chainpuri is very similar.

Last summer I took some khukuris to a gathering of survival-type folks from Ron Hood's forum. Several guys were doing some chopping and splitting tests with their knives. I volunteered a khukuri. They took a look at a big 21"er and said "no way, that monster will chop anything." So they chose the lightest khukuri I had with me, the Udhaipur, as most comparable to the Busse's, Anacondas, etc, they were testing.
They chopped, they cut, they pounded the knives through logs to split them. The Udhaipur at least tied with the best of the other knives. Some would say the $30, scruffy, handforged village knife beat the high dollar products of modern technology. The reality was, everyone agreed that the differences between the top knives were so small as to be insignificant for practical purposes.
